I am a teacher/tutor who enjoys working in a wide range of subjects, most often English/ESL, Math [usually Algebra], Economics, and Computer Science. My qualifications include four degrees [Mathematics, Economics, and Computer Science], with associated teaching credentials; TEFL/TESOL certificates; NCLB "Highly Qualified" ratings ; and experience teaching in the US, Canada, South Korea, and China.
In general, my teaching is Socratic, with a formal approach to key topics followed by extensive discussion. When teaching subjects other than English, I still stress proper and effective use of English. That means that papers, quizzes, and tests are marked for English [but not graded] as a supplement to the subject markings [graded].
For tutoring, the mechanics are somewhat different, but adapted to the subject. For written English, the focus is on organization, structure, and word choice. For ESL, there is a lot of reading aloud, both for me to assess pronunciation and while explaining vocabulary in context and to let the student's subconscious mind gather grammar rules subconsciously.

I have been tutoring extensively for the past four years, but teaching much longer. The tutoring sessions are usually one-on-one, but can be up to four or five students. When students have been blocked - e.g., repetitive failures - it is often easy to unblock them by relating the subject to one's surroundings, often in just a few sessions. In other cases, tutoring is a case of providing ongoing supplemental support.
My degrees, credentials, certificates, and ratings cover Mathematics, Social Sciences [Economics, History], Computer Science, English/ESL, Spanish, and Swimming, with experience in all these areas.
