I am a creative, technical, and business writer who mentors secondary, post-secondary, and adult writers in all forms of writing. I have an MFA in creative writing and an under-graduate degree in English. I've been published in fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry, completed a textbook manuscript in business writing, have won awards for my writing, and taught at the university level for six years.
I mentor students to assist them in developing strong writing skills through regular feedback and revision. My method includes question and answer, commentary on a piece of writing, followed by a discussion about how to make it more effective. All competency levels are welcomed, at any level of education.
Everyone has a natural ability to write well in any genre (format), and my task as a writing teacher is to help the student discover what he or she wants to say, the best format to present it, and to guide the decision making process so the writing becomes more effective.
Expect discussion, feedback, conversation, and the introduction of information as needed to improve the works in progress, including the assignment of writing exercises, reading, or fun exercises to assist in learning concepts.
Rates will increase for travel greater than 10 miles, and for writing longer than 25 pages.
I've been teaching writing for seven years at the university level to hundreds of students, and for decades in informal workshop settings. I have facilitated ongoing writing groups in the community, and am frequently contacted by former students for advice on writing works of fiction, non-fiction, and professional writing. My students report a higher level of expertise as writers, crossing boundaries of perceived ability to write better and more complicated texts than they thought they were capable of, as well as achievements of a personal nature, such as overcoming critical teachers in their secondary education or the perceived "inability" to write. Some students have told me they learned something about life by learning about writing in my courses, and found themselves more open to ideas, more creative in all areas of their lives, and more tolerant and compassionate in general.
I grew up with a speech impediment and the consequence of the yearning to have a free voice led me to writing. My speech impediment is still present, and you will notice it in hesitations rather than outright blocks in speaking, but it has taught me to realize that perceived limitations are largely false and with compassionate persistence can often be overcome.
