About Angelina

Angelina Kolobukhova was born and raised in Minsk, Belarus. At 8 years old, she fell in love with singing when she met her voice teacher, Veronika Yanovskaya, who introduced Angelina to jazz music and sparked the fascination with Ella Fitzgerald’s improvisation and Ray Charles’s soulful singing. While receiving her primary education, Angelina participated in international vocal competitions and festivals in Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), attending masterclasses and meeting like-minded musicians. In addition to jazz music, Angelina also became inspired by soul artists like Stevie Wonder and Jill Scott, and she released her first single, Off the Road when she was 17. At 17 she was awarded a scholarship to attend Adelphi University’s Honors College on Long Island, NY and moved to the United States in the summer of 2018. Initially, she intended to follow her parents’ footsteps in medicine, but later she decided to pursue music and ended up double-majoring in Music, Jazz Studies and Cognitive Neuroscience. Angelina graduated summa cum laude from Adelphi in May 2022. In 2021 and 2022, Angelina participated in the Boysie Lowery Living Jazz Residency, having performed at the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. Currently Angelina performs in New York City and the tri-state area, most recently having collaborated with Sofar Sounds, NPR Live @HOME Sessions, the Hartford Jazz Society, and the New Brunswick Jazz Project. Angelina has sung at venues like Ornithology Jazz Club, Birdland Jazz Club, Room623, Chelsea Table + Stage, and others. Just recently, Angelina became a finalist in the 2024 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is highly personalized, depending on your level and what you need most at the moment! My techniques are rooted in these key things: 1. Healthy Vocal Technique and Sound Production - with it being the foundation of singing, we will work on breath support and an aligned singing posture. (Where needed, we will not only work on your singing voice but also help you speak in a healthier way, since the two impact each other!) 2. Pitch and Ear Training - if needed, we will address pitch accuracy to make sure you sound your best! In addition, we'll do some fun ear training exercises after which you'll be able to recognize the sounds of various chords and intervals. This will help you figure out what the chords are to your favorite songs on your own in the future :) 3. Beginning Piano / Music Theory - if you're ever looking to perform live with a band or accompany yourself, I will teach you beginning piano and music theory so that you can comfortably inform the band of your key and be a musician in the most authentic sense of the word! 4. Performing/ Stage Presence - if you're looking to perform live, together we will develop your stage presence, stage speaking skills (such as introducing your songs and connecting with the audience), and any performance anxiety that can come up along the way. The bottom line is, I'll meet you where you are and help you get where you want to be! I believe that with a working pair of vocal cords and ears, and a pair of ears, everyone can learn how to sing! My lessons are a safe space where you can be your authentic self and where we will work on discovering and shaping YOUR unique voice.

I really enjoyed the lesson, I was even surprised by many things, that thanks to correct breathing you can sound completely different. And also moments of controlling your voice, which I didn't even know about.
