I usually try to teach subjects by providing examples, because I believe it is easier to understand something by knowing how and for what it is used, this has been really helpful especially for math. I usually start by asking the student if they have any question regarding their homework or any other subject they couldn't understand, and if yes I would work on those, if they didn't have any problems or questions I would ask one or two questions just to make sure and then start on a new topic.
