Doing something we don't enjoy is impossible to stick with it. If your students aren't enjoying your math lesson there not going to want to learn and won't be able to. As a teacher or tutor in Canada, it’s your job to help your students understand the subject matter in math. Of course, this can be difficult to achieve, especially when you are working with multiple students. There are a few different strategies you can use with your students so they can enjoy learning and grasp the lesson they need to no matter the level of math your teaching.

Real-world Examples

One of the easiest ways to help students learn math is by using real-world examples. Instead of making up problems that have no relevance to students use an example of something they would understand. If you are teaching to younger kids, use a relatable reference and the same goes for teaching older students. Using real-world examples the students can easily see the relevance in learning the subject.

Often time students can think the math problems won't apply to them or that dreaded thought of “when will I ever use this”. Real-world examples can easily be incorporated and can make all the difference in students learning. Using real-world examples is something you as the teacher or tutor can incorporate right now. It’s a good start for finding the right strategy to teach your students.

Visual Implementation

Using visuals to teach math can offer students a lot of different benefits. We often don't see math as creative, but this can be far from the truth by using this method. Students only really see math as symbols, but using pictures incorporates a whole new style of learning. They’ve done numerous studies on this method. One study was done by Joonkoo Park and Elizabeth Brannon in 2013. They found that the most powerful way of learning occurs when students use different parts of the brain. By using visuals for math problems students are using several different areas of the brain and thus performance was optimized. The study found that students using this method for learning math improved significantly. The study was done in 2013 but still holds true to this day.

Working in Pairs

Math doesn't always have to be learning from textbooks or from your teaching lessons. Students all have different styles of learning that can help other students learn. Having students work in pairs can allow them to problem-solve with each other. Students will be able to discuss ideas and find solutions to solve the problem. It can help students understand better because they'll be sharing their ideas on how to solve the problem. Both students will benefit from sharing and explaining different ideas.

Math Games

We've talked about math games in numerous math articles, but that's because math games are useful for so many things. There are lots of different strategies to teaching math and learning math games is a perfect addition.  Math games are great for all ages and provide usefulness for having students understand the material. Math games also have students more interested in the material their learning. For instance, playing a game like Jeopardy. Students can work together to solve math questions to win the game. It causes motivation for them to work on a math problem. Instead of having your students fill out a worksheet, you could add that worksheet into a Jeopardy game. Students will enjoy answering the questions as opposed to filling in a worksheet.

Thinking Out Loud

Solve problems with your students by having a discussion. Having your students take part in solving the problem, instead of you explaining the solution will allow them properly understand how to solve the problem. They can ask questions and talk with other students about their ideas. This strategy is like pair work, but it brings the whole class involved. It's a great way to engage the class. They'll be more intuned to the lesson and want to participate. It's important when using this method to have your voice in there. If students are stuck or don't understand something you should be fully explaining everything you're doing. By explaining everything your thinking while solving the problem can help your students.

Hands-On Learning

Hands-on math learning can take learning math with visuals one step further. This method can be most effective with younger levels of math. Students can find mah difficult because it's a new concept that they can't visualize. Instead of having them visualize you can use tools like legos or blocks to demonstrate how to solve math problems or math concepts. Students will have an easier time learning when they can see exactly what is happening in front of them instead of trying to visualize. An example of using hands-on learning for math is started by using blocks. You can add or subtract the blocks and have the students add or subtract the blocks in front of them. You can also use this method for multiplication and division. Hands-on learning can help your students better understand math.
