Reading material for most is through several ways such as internet articles, magazines or other things. These types of reading material don't always provide you with new vocabulary words. Poetry often has unusual words that you won't always come across. You can jot down new words you come across and find their meaning to expand your vocabulary.

Spark Creativity

Poems don't always directly tell you what the meaning is behind the poem. That part is for you, the reader, to figure out and justify your thinking. It can get you to think about the text and get creative about the words. Poems use a lot of symbolism, so it's your job to uncover the meanings.

Different Types of Poems

If you are completely new to poetry, it can be overwhelming trying to read new material. Some have complicated rules, while others are fairly simple. Let’s talk about some simple poems to get you started.

Sonnet Poems - They usually have 14 lines and follow either  Shakespearean or Italian rules. Their rhyming scheme is easy to follow along, especially if you're new to poems.

Haiku Poems - These poems are concise, and chances you have written one in school. A Haiku should have 17 syllables divided into three lines. The first line has 5 syllables, then seven syllables and the final five syllables.

Acrostic poems - These are another reasonably simple poem and most likely have done one before. First, spell out a word. It could be a name, object or anything else. Then think of something that starts with each letter.

Concrete Poems - Better known as shape or visual poetry, the words will take something visual.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
