What is Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding is a training style that is all about increasing muscle size. The training style focuses on hypertrophy which again means to increase muscle size. By training your breaking down your muscle fibres and then when they rebuild they come back stronger and bigger. Bodybuilding training plans should follow a high-rep exercise scheme. Higher reps do mean you won't be able to lift the same amount of weight, but it's not about strength.

One of the biggest issues for people starting bodybuilding training is they focus on lifting heavy. Lifting heavy can ruin your form and you may not be able to complete your reps. Hypertrophy training is based around a high-rep scheme to show effectiveness. It’s not that you won't be able to gain strength during a bodybuilding program, it's just going to be slow progress compared to following a strength training plan.

Bodybuilding is relatively easy to get started you just need to know where to start. Bodybuilding can be done at home or at the gym, but for this article, we’ll assume your starting in the gym. It’s going to be an effective way and it's more popular for the average person to work out in the gym compared to at home.

Training Program

Your first task should be finding the right training plan for yourself. Your plan is going to break down everything for you. From things like training days, off days, reps, sets, exercises and even the amount of weight you should be using can be found in your training plan. Walking into the gym and just picking different exercises isn't effective. Having a plan in the gym will keep you focused during your workout, but you’ll also be training your body effectively. Most training plans online can be effective. Of course, having a personal trainer create a workout plan that is personalized for you will be more beneficial.

Nutrition

Nutrition is often said to be 80% part of training which leaves only 20% for your workouts. Your nutrition needs to be on track, even more so with bodybuilding. A lot of bodybuilders will bulk up to increase muscle mass and then lose weight later on but try to maintain their muscles. If you look up professional bodybuilders in their offseasons there is a difference between seeing them on stage. Being a beginner it's always going to be recommended to bulk up first to increase muscle size. Consistency

The biggest part of any training program is consistency. If you're not consistent you won't see results. You need to trying your best. Of course, you're going to have good days and bad days. It’s just important on the bad days to get back on track. Having a goal can help you with consistency. It can motivate you and keep you dedicated to staying on track. If you want to see results you’ll have to stay consistent.

Effort

One thing our bodies are good at is homeostasis, which means staying the same. To see results you have to be training effectively in the gym. You need to make your body uncomfortable to increase your muscle size. This means if something is too easy, it's time to increase the weight. If you feel like you're just going through the motions it’s time to increase the intensity.

Misconceptions around Bodybuilders

One thing that needs to be noted, especially for beginners following a bodybuilding program is don't compare yourself to professional bodybuilders or other fitness influencers. Once you see someone shredded in a photo or on stage looking their best, they don't always look like that. Bodybuilders will do a cut before they step on stage or have a photoshoot to look their best, but it's impossible to look like that all the time. Being around 5% is simply just unhealthy. That being said you can still maintain a good look physique without having too low of a body fat percentage.
