“Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere.” – Chinese Proverb

Teaching isn’t easy and many teachers need to ensure that students are concentrating by making sure that their lessons are engaging. During the lockdowns and COVID restrictions, students were tasked with working from home and a lot of families started to realise just how difficult teaching is and how hard it is to focus on your work at home.

Some parents struggled to play the role of the teacher and help their kids do both their schoolwork and homework in the house.

So how can you get your homework done quickly and effectively?

The Importance of Concentration

Most students don’t look forward to having to sit down and do their homework. They’ll try to do their homework as quickly as they can to get it out of the way, which isn’t an approach that will help them in the long-term.

That said, to them, the faster they do their homework, the faster they can go and play.

The important thing about doing homework quickly is that it’s done well and you can achieve this by focusing on the task at hand.

Distractions will only amount to lost time so try to concentrate on the homework for a set period. The better their concentration, the less time they’ll have to spend doing homework.

Of course, like all of us, some students may struggle to focus for extended periods. Outside help can be useful and you don’t want to spend too long struggling on a single task without making any progress. If this happens, it may be worthwhile moving onto another task and coming back to the original task later on when help is available or once you’ve had time to think about the problem a bit more.

Check out our homework tips.

Set Aside Some Time for Doing Homework and Studying

As we said, concentration is the key to effectively doing your homework. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of focusing on your homework.

Some students struggle with their homework because their home isn’t the ideal environment for concentrating or studying. Similarly, they tend to see their home as somewhere they can relax or play. To circumvent this mentality, it’s a good idea to have a set time every day when you do homework so that it becomes a habit and you’re in the right frame of mind to do it. They’ll also know that once they finish their homework, they can go back to doing the things they enjoy.

If the student is old enough, they can schedule this time themselves. Having a set time to do their homework will make it part of their daily routine and easier to concentrate and after they’re done, they’re free to do whatever they want.

Setting objectives during this time is also a good idea. Work out what homework you’re going to do, how much time it’ll take, and knuckle down to get it done. Set an alarm or a timer to give yourself a challenge, just make sure that you don’t rush it.

Work in a Suitable Environment

It’s much easier to focus on your homework when you don’t have siblings running around the house. This is why you should look for a quiet and tidy place where you won’t be distracted. If you have a desk in your room, go for it. If you don’t, try to find a quiet part of the house.

Don’t forget to make sure that you have everything you need. You don’t want to have to get up and look for a book, a worksheet, or stationery as this is time wasted. By knowing you have everything you’ll need, you can fully focus on your homework.

Reward Yourself to Make Sure You Work More Quickly and Efficiently

What are you going to do once you’ve finished your homework?

Most of us will either relax or play. Keep this in mind when you’re doing your homework and it’ll make you want to finish your homework more quickly. Thinking about your reward can help you to focus on your homework as if you don’t get your work done, you won’t get any time to do what you want to.

A system of rewards can make your work far more effective. Before starting your homework, think about what you’ll do afterwards: play outside, play computer games, talk to your friends, etc. A clear objective will help you to concentrate.

Get Rid of Distractions

In addition to a neat and tidy workspace, you want to make sure that there isn’t anything around that’ll distract you. Turn off the TV, put away your games, and don’t leave devices like tablets or smartphones within reach as they’ll probably be pinging notifications the whole time.

There are so many things that can distract you and something as benign as quickly looking at a message on your phone can disrupt your flow and make it much more difficult to get back to your work afterwards since you’ll be thinking about the conversation rather than your homework.

To effectively do your homework, it’s a good idea to put your phone in another room or install an app that blocks access to social media when you’re supposed to be working. You could put your phone in flight mode to stop it from receiving messages and notifications.

There are also quite a few options, apps, and solutions out there to help you to concentrate.

Concentrate by Listening to Music as You Do Your Homework

Music can help you focus on your homework. Scientific studies have shown that classical music can improve concentration.

What better way to work than while listening to some of the best music ever created?

If you don’t like classical music, there are plenty of different genres you can listen to. Energetic music can even give you a boost. Ideally, you want instrumental music as lyrics can sometimes be a distraction. It’s difficult to read or write while also listening to song lyrics.

Take Regular Breaks to Work More Quickly

How can you get more work done by working less?

This might seem a bit crazy but regular breaks are a great way to keep your energy levels up and improve your concentration. Breaks are a useful way to give your brain a rest and you’ll work even more effectively having taken a few minutes. Breaks are also useful if you’re stuck on something or if you feel like you’ve hit a wall. After a while of focusing on your homework, tiredness can set in.

Take a breather, stretch your legs, and come back to the work well-rested and ready to go.

Why not make the most of your breaks with something different?

Your break can be used to teach you something new. There are a lot of fascinating videos online that are freely accessible as well as documentaries, YouTube videos, and plenty of stuff to help you to relax.

Do Your Homework in a Study Group

Doing homework in a group can be a double-edged sword: the group could be a distraction as you want to talk about anything but your homework. However, there are also advantages to working in a group.

Your classmates can be a source of motivation and you can even challenge each other to finish your work. At the end of the sessions, you could award points to whoever worked the hardest and spur each other on by making a competition out of it.

A study group could also be a useful way to talk about the homework itself. Sometimes, hearing something explained differently can make it much easier to understand, which can be useful if you get stuck.

Get Help from a Private Tutor

A private tutor or homework help tutor is another great way to help you get the most out of your homework or revision. Having a set time to work with your tutor will also encourage you to get your homework done during this time.

The tutor can also teach you techniques to get your homework finished more quickly and students with tutors also are less likely to distract themselves with smartphones, TV, or social media, for example.

If you're looking for private tutors, consider searching for them on Superprof. There are thousands of tutors offering lessons in academic subjects, arts and crafts, sports, musical instruments, foreign languages, and life skills so you're bound to find the right one for you.

Don't forget that a lot of the tutors also offer the first lesson for free so you can try several different tutors out before deciding on the one that's right for you. After all, if you're going to be working with the tutor quite a bit, it's important that you get along with them and they have the right skills for the job.
