It’s that time Montréal! It’s been a month into 2020 and statistics have told us that we have already stopped pursuing our new year’s resolutions. Is this true for you? Was one of your resolutions health-related? The common resolution this year or most years is to be healthier – more specifically lose weight.
For most of us, we know what to do when it comes to losing weight or just trying to be healthier. We know we need to move a little more and eat a little less. One of the things I love about Montreal is the ability to walk anywhere, everybody is walking around. Walking places instead of driving is a great step towards being healthy but for many of us, we have to do more.
How to Start Living Healthier?
Starting a new physical activity would be the perfect way to help you reach your resolution of losing weight or being healthier. Right now you’re immediately thinking of the gym – I can imagine you picturing it. The smell of sweat in the air, the grunting and the shouting you hear coming across the gym floor, plus the one person doing some crazy exercise. This doesn’t sound enjoyable, but this isn’t the only way to increase your physical activity.
Increasing your physical activity can and should be something you enjoy. Swimming, basketball, yoga, rock climbing or any other activity that can get your heart rate up can be included on this list. It doesn’t have to be you in the gym.
I know you want this year to be your best year. We all do. Every year we strive to be better. This is the year we can reach our health resolution. Going to the gym is what I love. It feels great when you notice changes on your body and you see yourself getting stronger. You get a sense of accomplishment and that just drives you to keep going.

Why You Should Hire A Personal Trainer?
If you want to start in the gym, I suggest hiring a trainer. It’s the best and safest way to start in the gym and gives you the best chance to reach your goal this year. Personal trainers are there to guide and help you along your journey.
The biggest benefit of hiring a trainer is they take the guess work out for you. If you had all the steps for a math problem. You’re more likely to answer that question correctly compared to someone that doesn’t. So wouldn’t you want the steps? This is the same for a trainer. You can try to figure things out on your own and it’s not impossible. I started in the gym alone. I thought I was doing everything right, but that wasn’t the case looking back. I could have had better progress right from the beginning if I knew what I was doing.

Most gyms you look at they will have a trainer. This can be in a group session or one on one personal training. Both are going to be effective but one on one personal training is all about you. Their gym is located downtown Montréal. They offer a large facility with high-quality equipment. Pro Gym offers everything. They have different areas in their gym that meet everyone’s needs. They have a gym, boxing, personal training and group classes. They also have an outdoor workout area, which would be great in the summertime. Pro Gym is also huge! It seems like it has to be big. On top of everything else, they have a health bar, a hair studio and a supplement store. Another great reason to join would be there open 24 hours. This means early morning or late night workouts are possible. There’s no reason to miss a workout at Pro Gym.
Report Gym has tons of fantastic reviews online. People seem to enjoy working out. They focus primarily on group training. They have a 30-minute Hit workout, a callisthenics class and they offer a promising 6-week challenge. Report Gym prides itself on helping everyone in Montréal start their fitness journey. Their trainers are top-notch. They all have impressive backgrounds and qualifications. Report Gym would be a great place to start.
This gym offers everything from your typical gyms but there are a few added benefits. They have a rooftop pool on their 3rd level. They have huge weight and cardio area. They offer different services as well from personal training to group classes. LaCite Club also has a massage therapist, physiotherapist, chiropractic, beautician and osteopathy on-site to truly make this a wonderful wellness center. They’re full team of trainers mixed with their wellness center truly makes a great experience for anybody looking to join!
Any of the gyms above would be a place to join when starting on your fitness journey. Most places will almost always offer a free session or free consultation with their facility or trainer. Always check out something before trying it gives you a chance to see if it would be a great fit for you. If you weren't looking for a gym, but still wanted to get moving. You have lots of options in Montréal.
Westmount Recreation Centre
The Westmount is an amazing community center. They have unlimited amounts of things you can do. To name a few they have, an NHL size hockey rink, outdoor pool, 3 multipurpose activity rooms and an outside field. It’d be a great place to get the family together or grab some friends and go skating in the winter, play soccer or use one of their multipurpose rooms.

This is a wonderful yoga studio that offers classes for all levels, they even offer lots of different workshops for anybody that curious. They even have private sessions for anyone that wants an individual yoga class experience. Most people think that Yoga is very mellow and wouldn’t be considered a physical activity, but trust me, yoga is. Yoga’s good for increasing flexibility, mobility and strength. Yoga can be a great way to wind down as well as increasing your health.
Zero Gravity Climbing and Yoga
For anybody that hasn’t been rock climbing, you have to try it. It’s a fun experience! It’s exciting when you reach the top of a wall. You get instant gratification, it feels amazing! Rock climbing can be great for all ages. It would be a great way to spend the day with your friends and family. Zero Gravity offers several different services that can tailor to different people. They also offer a coach so you’ll feel safe and be ready to climb a wall.
Start Your Health Journey
It's not just about joining a gym. It’s about enjoying the process. Some weeks are going to be better than others. Some days you might be more motivated and some days you might feel unmotivated. It’s going to happen, but we’re human. It’s okay to miss a workout or have a bad feeling. It’s just what you do after. Do you continue to miss a workout or eat poorly?
