When Do We Start Learning Math?

Children will be introduced to math at a young age. Even before there 3 they’ll be experiencing math. Math is usually only looked at through numbers but math starts in simple forms like shapes, patterns and objects. Children will notice these things from the start. Eventually, children will start to understand concepts such as addition and subtracting and then each year will continually learn more and more. Math is a subject that builds on each year. Students need to confident in their math abilities to continue to understand for the years coming up.

In kindergarten students will learn about numbers and start to explore shapes and sizes. As we mentioned above these things can be used to introduce basic math concepts. For instance, you can have your children sort blocks from size or colours which at the higher level can be used to understand subtraction or addition.

Math in Grade School

Grade school is where students start to understand more about math. In the early years, they’ll come more familiar with numbers and counting. They may even start to look at things like quantities, measurements and geometry. Later on, in grade school, in grade 4, they’ll start to learn about multiplication and addition all while learning more about the fundamentals of math. Then finally in grade 7, they’ll be introduced to more complicated formulas and principles of math.

Pursuing Math After High School

Students will continue to pursue math in high school. The students that enjoy math will start to look for career opportunities that use math. We often only think about math for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, but math can be used in various fields. Economics and social sciences also use math in their field and can be viable career paths for students that enjoy math. Having your child perform math activities can sometimes be a lot, especially coming from school and then learning again at home. A good and sneaky way of incorporating extra math into your child's life is to bring it up in conversation. You could ask basic math questions like how many nickels are in my hand? Your child can see the benefit of learning math as it relates to their daily life and at the same time they’ll be improving their math skills.
