Tips for Improving Memory

Doing well on an exam requires your memory. You have to recall the information and answer questions correctly, but you want to remember one step further. You want to be able to understand the information. This is why people often say to teach the information to someone else. It helps you know better and not only retain the information. Understanding knowledge and memory still go hand in hand. By improving with these tips, you'll be on the right path to understand the material and ace your exam.

Stay Focused - While studying, create a distraction-free zone. This means you need to limit any noises within or outside of your study space, scrap the cell phone and stay away from social media. During your studying time, you need to be studying. Limiting distractions will help you stay focused on the information you're supposed to learning.

Never Cram - Often, you'll hear other students say they cram all night for a big exam. This is not the way to study for your exam. It also can cause a lot of anxiety and stress, which again is bad for your exam. Instead of cramming, start studying as soon as the exam is a few weeks away. You don't have to study for hours on hours each day. You are studying way before the exam date allows you to check-in small chunks. Then when the exam day is getting closer, you don't have to spend the tie cramming to learn the information.

The Organization is Critical - Being disorganized won't help your memory. Your brain will feel likes it is all over the place. You won't be able to focus on the task at hand. Before you start studying, get organized. Organize your notes, lectures and any other information needed for your exam. Your mind will feel better, and you can adequately learn one thing at a time.

Visual Diagrams - Visual diagrams are a good study technique. They have been proven to work well with your memory. These visuals could be flashcards, mind maps, or Venn diagrams. Visuals help you connect information and can also help break things down instead of having information everywhere.

Say Things Out Loud - Studying requires lots of reading. Instead of reading your notes or visual diagrams in your head, read them out loud. A study in 2017 found that reading material out loud can improve your memory. It helps understand and recall the information. When we read in our heads, we can easily skip over words or tune out while reading. Start studying out loud.

Sleep - Sleep has to be on our list for improving your memory. A lack of sleep will lead to poor performance, which, yes, leads to impaired memory while studying and on your exam day. Ensure you're getting adequate sleep the nights leading up to your exam. There have also been few studies that suggest taking a nap after studying can improve your retainment of the information.

Teach Your Friends - As we mentioned above, teaching the formation is essential to acing your exam. Instead of just memorizing the information, you'll understand the information. This means you'll know the data at a deeper level. Getting together with a group of friends can be a fun way to practice teaching each other the news. You can learn by teaching but also by listening to your friends.

Eat Well - We've mentioned eating well in a lot of studying articles, but it's very important. Fueling your body with what it needs for exam time can give you the energy to retain information. You'll also feel better when you're studying. It can be easier turning to junk food, but you can feel sluggish and tired after.

Studying is always going to require us to recall information. Learning about improving your memory for studying can be a great way to improve your grades on your next test or exam. You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
