What is Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding in the simplest definition is getting bigger muscles. Of course, this is the simplest term that can relate to the average person. If you look at bodybuilding from the competitive aspect, it becomes a lot more. Professionals bodybuilders have to look at posing, similarities and few other things when thinking about coming on to the stage. Whether you are on stage or the average person in the gym you're going to follow a few of the similar things

Bodybuilders' style of training is based around hypertrophy. Hypertrophy is a fitness term meaning to increase the growth and size of muscle cells. This causes your muscles to grow. There have been numerous studies that hypertrophy training is the most beneficial for those looking to increase muscle mass. Each exercise is usually performed with high reps to ensure an increase in muscle growth. The intensity for hypertrophy training is still high, but the amount of weight used will be less compared to someone that is a powerlifter for instance.

By doing high repetitions you're breaking down your muscle fibres and when your body repairs those muscle fibres they are bigger and stronger, thus causing an increase in size. How our body grows muscle is of course a more complex definition, but that is an implied version to give you a basis of why bodybuilders use hypertrophy.

Benefits of Bodybuilding

Bodybuilding is one of the most popular training sessions in the gym and it’s easy to see why. Thinking about bodybuilders on stage, you usually picture massive guys. This isn't something you might not aspire to be and the reality becoming that size is nearly impossible for the average gym go-er. Professional bodybuilders spend hours a day training in the gym. Their whole day is consumed by eating right and training right. Steroids are another popular usage by professional bodybuilders to get that big. The average person training in a bodybuilding-style can get the bodies they want and get the benefits of bodybuilding.

Aesthetic Purposes - A lot of people turn to bodybuilding to look good. If you aspire to have muscular arms, legs or even 6 pack abs, the bodybuilding training is one of the best routes to have the body you want.
Confidence- Bodybuilding style programs can have you gain a lot of confidence. seeing your body grow is a good feeling. You can feel comfortable in your body and knowing you put the work in.

Safe - For any beginner in the gym, bodybuilding is the safest exercise. Exercises are easy to learn and you can keep the weight relatively light. It's still important to always perform proper form.

For those of you already following a bodybuilding program or are looking into a bodybuilding program that is one key tip all professional bodybuilders will tell you; it’s not about the weight. The goal of bodybuilding is to grow, it's not about how much weight you can lift. If you care about getting stronger, bodybuilding is not the right program for you. Of course, you're still going to get strong doing bodybuilding, but you would see better results by following a strength program.

Arnold Schwarzenegger - Arnold has to be on our list. He is a person everyone knows his name and his story. Although he’s retired from bodybuilding he still likes to stay in shape at his age. Arnold was one of the best bodybuilders of his time. He was known for his big chest and personality on stage. Interestingly enough, if around was to compete in today's bodybuilding world, he would be considered small and wouldn't be able to win a competition. Arnold is still a great person to look up to when looking into bodybuilding. he has lots of old clips that’ll put a smile on your face. Arnold loved the training.

Ronnie Coleman - He is another popular bodybuilder that is a familiar name for most. Ronne is an 8x Mr. Olympia winner and is often said to be the greatest bodybuilder of all time. He started bodybuilding in his 20s and by the age of 26, he won his first trophy at the Mr. texas show in 1990. he was the underdog of the competition and beat out a lot of professionals. After winning Ronnie kept entering shows and building a name for himself in bodybuilding. He did have a hard time winning competitions in his early years but he was destined to get better. It wasn't until 1995 he took first place in the Canada Pro Cup. From here he continued to dominate the competition.

Phil Heath - Phil is known as the gift in the bodybuilding world. He is a 6 time Mr. Olympia champion. He started to gain interest in bodybuilding in 2002. He worked at a local gym and always wanted to learn about nutrition, supplementation and training. In just 3 years he went from 185 to 215 pounds while maintaining 6% body fat. In 2003 he won his first competition called the Rock Mountain Nothern Physique. Phill continued to have success in his early bodybuilding shows. In 2007 he took some time off to re-think and improve his training. In 2008 he was back and bigger and stronger than ever on stage. For the next 6 years, he won the Mr. Olympia title.
