Why Study Italian?
Oftentimes, a lot of people get intimidated by this language because its native-speakers speak too fast or too slow—sometimes, even too roughly.
It doesn’t matter whether they’re simply having a great conversation or engaging in a heated argument, to non-native speakers, the speed—something people really do notice—can be quite off-setting.
But while the language does have its own set of speedy challenges, it’s still one of the best languages to learn! Here are the reasons why:
#1: Entry to the Arts and Sciences
There’s no doubt that Italy has one of the richest cultures in the world. Many of what we now know and appreciate in the arts and sciences are born from this country. Some famous Italians in history are Marco Polo, Galileo Galilei, Michelangelo, Dante Alighieri, and Benito Mussolini.
Well, if those names didn’t ring any bells at all, you still have Robert de Niro, Giorgio Armani, and Donatella Versace to think of.
Anyway, this language is the native language of many famous persons who have contributed greatly to this world and that alone is a reason why you should study. One recent UNESCO report has stated that about 60% of the art treasures the world has can be found in Italy.
Studying it does not only give you a deeper understanding of the language, but also an entry to the arts and sciences.
#2: Suitable for Aspiring Polyglots
As we’ve mentioned, Italian is a Romance language. But what most people don’t know is that this language is much closer to Latin than any other language, considering that English is mostly derived from a lot of Latin words.
If you aspire to be a polyglot—a person who knows how to speak several languages—then Italian should be the first Romance language you learn.
The mere fact that it’s much closer to Latin will make it easier for you to study other Romance languages such as Portugese, Spanish, and Romanian. That way, you’re not just going to speak your way through Italy, but also through other beautiful countries as well.
#3: Work Opportunities for Various Professions
Several fields that Italy is known for include fashion, culinary, interior design, graphic design, tourism, and furniture production. All of these, in a way, are related to art, making it one of the world’s hubs for professionals who seek to flourish in the said fields.
For those of you who wish to work in this European country, it’s a great advantage to be able to speak and understand the native language. True, many Italians are fluent in English, but it’s a solely different working experience when you can speak through their own.
