It’s cold in Vancouver. Actually, it’s freezing right now in Vancouver. It’s a lot harder to be active or get outside in the Winter. You have to put on bundles of clothes just to stay warm and even that doesn’t help beat the weather some days. This can be the reason we’re typically less active in the Winter. Although for some, they love the winter. Skiing, snowboarding, and skating are their favourite activities. But what if you don’t love winter activities?

We always want to be active in the warmer months. We can walk, run, play a sport outside and tons of other things. It makes it easy to stay active. Statistics tell us we gain an average of 1-5 pounds more weight in the winter. This could be because of the back to back family dinners we experience at Christmas time or the partying around New Years, but us not being as active has to have something to do with it.

Think about yourself. What do you do that’s active in the summer and winter? I bet that the winter list is a lot smaller. So what can you do to stay active in the winter months? Well, you could pick up winter sports. If you haven’t tried skating or skiing maybe this is your year to start. These 2 things can also be a lot of fun and a good workout or you could join a gym.

Join the Gym

Joining a gym can be the easiest way to stay active this winter. You don’t have to join a gym because you want to lose weight, build strength or build muscle. You can simply just join to stay active. For warning though, you might see an increase in strength or you may start to lose weight, but I assume that’s an okay side effect.

If you’re unsure about joining the gym or are nervous it's normal. I love going to the gym. It’s great stress relief, a great way to stay active and a great place to go with friends. It’s a hobby of mine that I would encourage everyone to try it. The biggest factor you may be feeling is you don’t want to feel embarrassed or be judged. These two factors can easily change. Everyone in the gym is just focused on themselves. That’s the reason we work out, it’s for ourselves. We’re not trying to impress anyone; we’re just there to work on ourselves to get better.

If you do feel embarrassed about going and not knowing what to do, you’re not alone. The gym has a lot of strange equipment and you can usually see someone doing some odd gym exercise, but I promise you, you can feel comfortable in a gym.

Become Confident In The Gym With A Personal Trainer

Your trainer will hold you accountable. You’re going to have days when you don’t want to go to the gym. Or there’s going to be days when you’re having trouble to stay on your goal. Your personal trainer will be with you every step of the way. The gym is all about being consistent. Having a trainer waiting for you means your less likely to miss a workout.

Every gym in Vancouver looks incredible. From studios to big box gyms there’s a gym for everyone in Vancouver. Most gyms will offer personal training it’s just going to depend on the facility you want to train at.

2 Types of Gyms

  1. Studio gyms are my personal favourites. They have a personalized touch meaning they truly get to know their members; you don’t just feel like another member. Studio gyms can be more expensive but this is because most studio gyms limit their member count. This means they can keep their members from walking into a busy gym.
  2. Big box gyms are a great cheap alternative to studio gyms. These gyms have tons of amenities from saunas, towel service, hydro beds and tanning just to name a few. The downside to big box gyms is they can be busy. This means you can be waiting around for a machine. I wouldn’t say this is a huge issue. It's going to be busy at peak hours but if you go anytime else they’re usually okay.
