Choosing an additional major or minor in university can be a tough decision. You may choose to study another subject that will complement your main area of study. For example, some English majors will choose communications or Journalism, Biology students may pair up with Chemistry and Visual Arts students will pair up with Fine Art history. Another option is to choose a subject you are passionate about, and may not be related to your degree at all - whether it is Mathematics, Philosophy, History or Cultural Studies.

Whichever program you choose, you can be certain that it will likely benefit and support your learning and long term career goals no matter what. Every academic discipline enables students to develop a unique skill set, like analysis, inferencing, or communication. If that area of study makes us feel happy by piquing our interests or opening up a whole new world of knowledge, then we have already done something positive for our learning.

Statistics is one area of study that many students likely choose for its practicality, or at least its connection to another major we are taking. Statistics, after all, seems like a course you might take only if you absolutely have to. For anyone whose eyes immediately looked past it while checking out a course catalog, you should probably know that it is not only practical, but deeply fascinating. Students who are also aiming for a major that serves career aspirations in business, the health sciences, and academic research will discover that it can be a major asset to their professional resumes.

Canada is a country that hits so many marks: friendly people, beautiful landscapes, vibrant cities, and world-class universities. Canadian students are choosing statistics majors every day: learn more about why so many students are making the switch.

It’s no secret that Vancouver is one of the most desirable places for students to study in Canada. Students should keep in mind, however, that rents can be rather costly compared to other Canadian cities, but the price is definitely worth the lifestyle benefits you will receive from living here.

Located on Canada’s West Coast, Vancouver is renowned for its glass skyline, mountain views, beaches, and heavily forested parks. Students that attend the illustrious University of British Columbia or Simon Fraser University have access to a city filled with amazing international restaurants, spectacular oceanside bike trails, and all the amenities that a metropolitan city has to offer.

Vancouver students also love the city’s easy to use train and subway service, which can bring you straight to the airport. You will not find a city with fresher air and so much access to nature. The community is outdoorsy, eco-conscious, and has a growing economy that includes technology and financial services. Vancouverites are known for their dedication to wellness and nature, so if a laid back and relaxed lifestyle appeals to you it is the place to be. Whether you stay just for your degree or want to plant roots over the long term, you will have a wonderful time in Vancouver.

Toronto is known for being home to many of the top universities and colleges in Canada. Why is statistics one of the best majors to enroll in? Find out more about learning statistics in Toronto.

Understanding Basic Statistics

Statistics involves the study of quantitative data - how to gather, analyze, and interpret information better. Many students of mathematics are drawn to statistics because students will need strong skills in algebra and calculus to be successful in the subject.

Should the study of statistics seem foreign to you, you can be assured you have probably been introduced to the subject from a young age. Yes, grade school math students have all studied basic statistics in Canada, though it may have been called data management and probability!

When kids learn data management and probability, they are usually constructing bar and line graphs, making inferences about data, and surveying friends to gather data that can be graphed in different ways. They also look at pie charts, maps, climate graphs, and tables, answering basic questions about the information contained in them. By middle school, most kids have already mastered the concepts of mean, median and mode, and have certainly started making conversions between fractions and decimal numbers. To learn probability, students often use dice, play games and construct tree diagrams to understand the concepts of chance and uncertainty.

By the time we learn statistics in university, it is exactly as one might expect - much more complex, and interdisciplinary.

Statistics majors are in high demand because they have a unique skill set used in nearly every profession. Find out why so many students are learning statistics in Montreal.

Why Statistics is Important

Statistics is connected to nearly every area of scientific research and is particularly relevant to business. The importance of statistics perhaps became most apparent during the COVID-19 pandemic, where millions around the world observed the data collected from local and international infection rates, the efficacy of vaccines, and the surge of new variants. Statistics influence everything from public policy to health regulations. It doesn't take much to see how relevant statistics can be to our everyday lives!

Beyond the pandemic, statisticians are constantly developing and shaping the information that impacts our lives. Businesses will make major decisions based on risk and uncertainty, and those factors are clearly illuminated through actuaries, who have likely studied statistics. The information that the government provides us about the country, its industries, economy and natural environment are all gathered by statisticians. Turn on the TV to watch any sport and you will hear statistics, from the free throw average of a player to the speed of a tennis serve. Apply for car insurance, and it is likely that a statistician has played a role in determining your premium.

There are so many fields that the study of statistics will touch, and the skills of a statistics major are always in high demand.

Windsor students have access to it all: beautiful beaches, city views, small town life and a great university. So why are so many students signing up for statistics? Learn more.

Where Can I Complete a Statistics Degree Online?

As great as it can be to learn on campus, the reality is that many of us may not have the ability to move close to a university, may already be working, have families, or perhaps we simply prefer to learn online.

For those of us that fall into that category, an online Statistics degree can be the perfect solution. The good news is you won’t be restricted to Vancouver - you can take your degree from literally anywhere in the world you can get admission! Some schools that have online degrees in statistics or statistics related areas include: MIT Professional Education, Stanford Online, EdX and Colorado State University.

In many Canadian Universities, you may be able to find blended programs where you can do a mix of online learning and in-person.
