For most of us that are past the age of 20, we have stopped reading. We continue to read in our day-to-day lives, but many of us have stopped reading for fun. We often catch up with other things and don't make the time, but reading has many great benefits everyone can experience.

We start to learn to read when we're 6 or 7 years old. Were introduced to the alphabet, vowels, phonetics and small words. Then we begin to learn more and more until we can thoroughly read. Eventually, in our older years were reading for school like book reports or finding research on topics. It forces us to read, but not a lot of students are enjoying the reading material. Many people have negative annotations around reading. It could be from past school years, but reading offers lots of great benefits. You have to give it a shot.

Benefits of Reading

Reading has lots of great benefits. We'll talk about some of our favourites below. The great thing about reading is anyone can find something they enjoy reading. Whatever your interests are or you want to learn, there will be a book about it. Instead of purchasing new books to read, use your local library. A lot of times they have a wide selection of books. Some libraries in Canada can also order a book you may be looking for. Check out your local library.

Here the benefits you can gain from reading.

Entertainment - Getting lost in a good book can be a great feeling, especially if you can picture the words in your head and act out the scenes. It's almost like watching a movie. Reading is an excellent form of entertainment. It would help if you found something you're interested in. It can be a great hobby to enjoy or the perfect way to spend a relaxing day.

Stress-Release - We all have stressful days or even weeks. It’s essential to find the right way to manage your stress levels. Find a book you enjoy and set aside the time to read. Even reading for a few minutes a day, you can start to feel better overall about your stress.

Knowledge - There is a topic about everything written in a  book. Anything you want to learn like a skill, a new language, or about history, you can find it in a book. Pick any topic you want to learn more about, and you can learn everything you want through reading about it. You’re guaranteed to come across a book you want to read. Books aren't the only resources you find information online, in magazines or in the newspaper.

Expand Your Vocabulary - Reading expands your vocabulary. Having a better vocabulary means you can articulate your words better. You’ll also be able to improve your communication skills. Learning new words will work your way into normal conversations. You’ll come across as well-spoken, which is an important personal and professional skill.

Focus - Reading requires focus. Over time reading, you'll get better at focusing. Our attention nowadays is being pulled in every different direction from a variety of sources. By reading, you have to put all your focus into one thing. Start reading for just a few minutes. You’ll notice a difference next time you're concentrating on something else.

How to Get Into Reading?

Reading can be a form of entertainment. You get to deep dive into a good book or magazine or article, and it helps you relax. Reading a book can also be like watching a show with a good cliffhanger. You have to keep watching to see what's next. The same idea can happen when you read.

The first part of getting into reading is to find something you're excited about. You could read about history, sports, cultures or read a fictional story. It would help if you found something you want to read. This isn't like school where you are forced to read things you see that disinterests in. You want to get excited about reading.

The second part of getting into reading is to find the time. As we mentioned above, you can get caught up in your day and never sit down to read. By making the time in your schedule, you'll have no excuses not to read. Even adding it to your calendar can make it more concrete. It's like an appointment you cannot miss. You have to willing to put everything else aside for the time being.

The third part is space. You need to have a reading space, and it needs to be quiet. Having distractions on t.v or people around will make it hard to concentrate, and you'll have an easier time putting your reading materials down. Familiar places are the living room or bedroom, but you might have your own space.

Getting into reading comes down to you. You have to be willing to put in the time. We've all mentioned how we should read more but never put it into action. The hardest part sometimes is getting ready to do the action. Reading itself can be an easy task, but encouraging yourself actually to sit down can be hard. Creating a habit around reading will make it easier. The first time you read might be the hardest. The second time will become a little easier, and so on, along with creating a habit. Use the tips we mentioned above about having a reading space and a scheduled reading time. You'll be on the path to reading more. Now is the time to finally start reading.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
