Costs of Cross-training

Looking at equipment and gym fees there are going to be a few things we have to breakdown and explain before getting into the dollar amount. It should be important to know the uses and importance of each before making the price point. Everyone is going to see different values in things. We’ll do our best to keep things non-bias from our own opinions and just give you the facts around equipment and gym fees.

Equipment

Talking about equipment is going to be for the person that trains at home. In most fitness workouts, including cross-training, you can use as little or as much equipment as you want. The equipment you’ll need is going to be based on you. If you want to use your body weight, don't buy any equipment, but if you want to use equipment spend as you wish. Equipment is not needed to reach your fitness goals, but it can help. In Canada, we don't have the luxury of working out outside all year round so having some equipment indoors like a treadmill or pull-up bar can certainly be beneficial. The equipment you’ll need is also going to be based on your program. You should be able to find a cross-training program that meets the requirements of the equipment you’ll need.

Gym Fees

Working out at a gym can be beneficial. It can be hard to workout out at home. You have things like distractions and you’ll have to store your fitness equipment somewhere. It can be nice to work out at a gym and just focus on your workout. The type of gym you're going to work out in is going to vary in price depending on the gym you choose. Your typically big box gym can work for cross-training.

The Cost of Equipment

The cost of gym equipment isn't cheap and at the very least it can be hard to find easily affordable gym equipment. Buying cheaper equipment of less quality isn't ideal either. You want something that's built to last. It needs to be durable, especially when you're looking into power towers or dumbbells. These things will get used daily. They need to withstand the usage.

To give you an idea of a few pieces of gym equipment you may need we’ll list the average prices based on searching on the internet. The prices may vary depending on the demand or your area, but they can serve as your guide.

  • Treadmills - $800
  • Dumbbell Set - $200
  • Squat Rack -$1000
  • Power Tower -$300
  • Resistance Bands - $40

Looking at these items above, they can be some of your common items. Of course, it would be ideal to have everything at once, but you can slowly add to your collection of equipment. There are also alternatives to something for a lower cost. For instance, dumbbells can be expensive items especially when you need multiples of them, but resistance bands can work in the same way and are much cheaper. Another option for gym equipment is to buy them second-hand. Websites like Kijiji or even Facebook marketplace can be great to find used equipment. Also, ask around. A lot of times people have gym equipment in their basement there not using. Again, the equipment can be used as a tool to help you, but you can still efficiently cross-train with your body weight.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
