Tips for Art School

Art classes are much different than your typical class, while most programs spend their time in the classroom majority of art students will spend their time in the studio. The studio is where you're going to create your work and start to develop your talent as an artist. The best part about having a studio is it's going to have everything you need from start to finish. Your school wants to make sure students have the right resources to develop their talents. Art school is going to have a lot of new experiences for you as you begin your journey into the art world. Here are tips for Surviving art school.

Grades Aren't Everything - Up until art school grades play a big role in your success. In math or English, you always need good grades, but art school works a little differently. Your grades in school will have an effect on your successes, but it's your art that will speak for itself. Your artistic skills will be able to set you apart from other people, not the grade you're assigned. Your portfolio is going to play a big part in school and your art career.

Try New Things - Sticking with your comfortable mediums and skills in the studio won't have you grow, Art school is your chance to try new things. If you've never tried using paint, use paint. This is your opportunity to be allowed to make mistakes. You want to put your skills to the test and become the best you can be. Always talk with your professors as well to see if there is something you can improve on or if there is something that would like to see.

Network - Art school is the perfect place to build connections in the art industry. Networking is key. Professors are usually professionals in the art world who would know a list of contacts to help you. Schools also bring in guest presenters that are very experienced in the art world. You should also try to make friends. Art school can be very demanding from the intensity of art projects. It's good to speak with people who understand what your going through.

Art School is Stressful - Art school can be demanding at times especially when you have due dates approaching. It's safe to say you'll have a few late-nights finish up art projects. If you are feeling stressed you need to find ways to relax. This could be picking up a hobby, hanging out with friends or just going for walk. Try not to overthink things too much. It's always best to stay ahead of your projects and don't wait till the last minute.

Don't Compare Yourself - Being around other talented artists can make it easy to compare yourself. You should stay in your own lane don't compare yourself. Everyone is going to have their own strengths and weaknesses in the art studio. It's important to stay focused on your own artwork. It's not going to help you learn and grow as an artist if you're concerned about other people's work. If you do notice someone is more talented, instead of doubting your own abilities ask them for feedback and ways you can improve. You can always learn something from your peers.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
