Learning Russian By Yourself Vs Using a Teacher

We often don't want to spend our money on certain things because we want to do it ourselves. For somethings this a great idea, but for learning a language we always recommend hiring a qualified Russian teacher. Having a teacher by your side when you’re trying to learn a new language will greatly increase your chances of learning Russian. It’s not impossible to learn Russian by yourself, but you need to be determined and willing to put in the work. Often we start a new skill and then we lose interest. Maybe you wanted to learn the guitar, but now it sits collecting dust. You don't want this to happen when learning Russian. You want to be able to stick with it and end up being fluent in Russian. There are so many great benefits to learning Russian with a teacher.

Accountability - The biggest reason for hiring a teacher instead of learning by yourself is accountability. Hiring a teacher greatly increases your chance of learning Russian. There are going to be days when you don't want to practice or study. On those days your tutor will be right there with you keeping you on task. You're also going to have dedicated time each week so you can continue to progress forward.

Information Guide - Learning Russian on your own can lead to a lot of answered questions. One of the biggest questions is how do you know if this information is right? There are 100s of online resources that may offer to help you learn Russian, but you don't know if the information is right or wrong. You're also missing out on pronunciation. You want to be positive you're pronouncing everything correctly.

Pathway - Your teacher will have a dedicated pathway to becoming fluent in Russian. They’ll be actively accessing your strengths and weakness so you can continue to progress forward. When you're learning on your own it can be hard knowing when to start or when to progress. Starting with something too hard can frustrate you and start with something too easy you’ll get bored. Your teacher has a pathway built for you so you can succeed.

Is Learning Russian Hard?

Any new language is going to be difficult, but it's not impossible. Learning anything just takes time and practice. This is why we recommend using a tutor or finding a class. It’ll help you stay motivated and stay on task. It can be much harder to learn Russian at home by yourself because you won't have the motivation to practice and study all the time, but your teacher will help you continue studying.

The Foreign Service Institute or FSI has created a national guide for English speakers to determine how difficult a language is to learn. The easiest category is category 1 and the hardest category is 5. Russian isn’t a category 1, but it's also not a category 5. It's a category 4. This does make it seem like it's a difficult language, but according to their guidelines, you could be fluent in 44 weeks. That's less than a year. If you’re thinking about learning Russian you could be fluent by next year. You just need to put in the work and practice.
