Writing Poetry

Starting to write poetry can seem daunting—questions like how to begin to come up. The more you think about writing poetry, it can stop you from writing. Just like any writer, you have to pick up a pencil or computer and start writing. We can give you a few tips for creating if you are lost about the details. But don't be too concerned about the details when you first start.

Reading Poetry - Chances are if you've been reading poetry for, a while you'll be off to a good start. Take some of your favourite poems and analyze them. Look at the structure and the flow of each line. You'll get a feel for how the poetry is written and how you can start writing yours.

Write Your First Draft - Your first draft will never be perfect, ever! Obsessing over each line, you'll never be able to get something down. Just write what comes to mind. You can always go back and change things up.

Use Tools - After you have a draft, it's time to make changes. There are specific tools like using thesauruses to enhance your poem. It's something even professional writers take advantage of.

Create a Story - Your poem should convey a story. It's a simple concept you understand when first learning. Poems can be like a short novel.

Connect with Other Poets - If you're stuck for ideas or want some feedback knowing some poets can help with these issues. It can help you perfect your poem, or it can improve it. Each of the poets you network with will have their input about your piece.

How to Submit Poetry?

There will come a time after you write a few poems that you'll want to begin to share. It's a good feeling having someone else gain value from your work. You can also get paid for your poems, depending on where you submit your poems too. The significant part about wanting to submit poetry is there are lots of places that accept submissions. These three websites are only some of the thousands out there. Do your research and find a submission that is right for you. If you already visit a poetry website or magazine, chances are they'll be looking for submissions. We'll list a couple of places you can start with.

Thrush Poetry Journal -They publish a magazine six times a year and are always looking for submissions. They accept poems from new and experienced poets. Thrush expects all work to be unpublished. There is also an unpaid publication, meaning they won't pay you.

Rising Phoenix Review - They are an online publication that accepts submissions on an ongoing basis. They're looking for poems that look at uplifting diverse voices and creating a better world. Rising Phoenix accepts poetry from everyone. It doesn't matter about your background.

FreezeRay - There an online publication that focuses solely on culture poetry. You can write about anything from video games to modern films and overhang in between

*Note - Make sure to pay attention to all submission guidelines. Most publications or other sources that accept submissions will have instructions they expect to follow. If you don't meet the guidelines, your submission won't be read. Submissions can also take a while to read. If you haven't heard anything in a few weeks, all is not lost. Some places will take months to get back to you.

Spend the Time Writing Poetry

The first poem you ever write will be your worst poem. You don't have the experience and practice. The only way to get better at writing poetry is to spend time writing poetry. It can be hard sometimes to sit down and practice. Applying for poetry submissions can be an excellent way to get the motivation you need to practice more. Even if you don't get accepted your first time around, keep practicing and put in the work to get better.

Keep researching and writing, and eventually, you will get accepted by a magazine or website. When they consider submissions, most people give up after the first couple they apply for. This isn't the way to go when submitting poems, especially if you are new to the game. There are even a few of the submission websites we listed there looking for new poets. These are the submissions to apply for. In due time you’ll get better. You need to spend the time.

As we mentioned above, don't get concerned about your first draft or even the details of writing poetry. When your first starting, it's essential to practice writing. Don't become too worried over each word you write or titles and other pointless things. You'll never finish a poem by writing it this way. You'll never be able to get in a flow and write out words. Write your first draft and then go back and change things up.

You can usually find me writing at a cafe sipping on coffee or working out at the gym. I fell in love with writing a few years ago and have never looked back. I love being able to share my words with the world.
