How to Run a Marathon?

That 42 km or 26 miles can seem like a long distance. Even when you first start out running a 3km or 5km can seem hard enough, how will you ever run the full distance? You just have to continue to practice and stay on track. As long as you keep constantly training, 3km will become easy, and you’ll be able to continue to make progress until you can run the full distance.

We’re not marathon coaches, so we’ll link to some great beginner marathon programs that are written by professionals. We can also give you some great advice about training and other things that may come to mind when training. It is possible to run a marathon. You just have to be willing to put in the work and get ready to cross that finish line. Our first tip for training for a marathon is to sign up for one right now. Marathons happen all the time; it’s important to give yourself able training time. Running a marathon with little practice is a bad idea.

It’s recommended that beginners book their race between 4-6 months before. Booking the race makes it real. You’re no longer thinking about running one; now it’s time to put it into action. You need to start training or come race time you won't be able to finish. Marathon races in Canada also cost some money, so it's even more motivation to train properly to run it.

Why Should You Train For a Marathon?

You need to train for a marathon; there are no ifs ands or buts. Marathon training will require you to run around 3-5 times a week. It’s important to have adequate time set aside each day to prep for your marathon. Every time you miss a run, it's hindering your progress for race day. The last thing you want is to be under a trainer for your marathon race. You want to be able to cross that finish line. Stay committed to your scheduled runs.

Training for a marathon, most importantly, will get you feeling confident about finishing. Thinking about every km in the race can seem daunting, but eventually, you’ll be running around 30km on your long days near the end, and you’ll feel great. Having the confidence to finish the race is huge when it comes to race day. Another important factor for training is safety. If you're not active or if you don't run, your body isn't used to the stress of running. You can get seriously injured if you start running long distances out of the blue. You can get knee or back injuries from your body not being ready, and more issues can arise of not training properly.

Having a training plan will ensure your running safely, meaning you're keeping your body healthy. Each week you’ll build on your km, so your body is adapting to the changes. Even if you have seen those videos of people running a marathon without training, it's ill-advised. In most of those videos, they start feeling the effects during the race or shortly after. Plus, don't you want to feel good crossing the finish line and during your race. You don't want to be in pain or think you can't do it. Having a plan gets you ready for success.

The Equipment You Need for Marathon Training

Running does only require you have a good pair of running shoes, but there are a few other pieces of equipment you’ll need to grab. Getting the right equipment can only make you have an easier time training. Having other equipment should be seen as a tool to help you. They can make training easier, but you'll still have to put in the work.

There are lots of great reviews online about running equipment. Always do your research before purchasing equipment. You want to make sure you're getting the right equipment based on price and quality. Running equipment can be expensive, so if something is too cheap it may be of bad quality.

Running Shoes - Shoes need to be on your number one on things you need to buy. Those old pair of running shoes aren't going to do the trick. A good pair of running shoes can help you train safely and keep your joints safe. It’s also best to talk to a professional about buying shoes. There is the right pair of shoes out there to train properly in. Suppose you’re uneasy about talking to a professional. Most people are unaware that they may need a larger shoe when running. If your shoes fit snug, you’ll be hitting your toes against the front over and over again. Talk to a professional about getting the right shoes.

Running Clothes - By training for a marathon, you'll be running a lot more. This also means you'll be going through hefty loads of clothes each week. Purchasing a few extra pairs of running clothes is always a good idea. You don't want to be doing laundry every other day. Remember to have clothes that are breathable and move with you.

GPS Tracker - Many apps have this feature, such as Nike Club Run or Samsung Health app, but you also purchase a GPS tracker. It's going to help you keep track of your runs. The ones desinged for running will also break down your pace, speed and time during each run. It can help you improve, plus you want to know how far you're running.

These 3 equipment pieces would be the minimum for training for a marathon. There are other things out there for running, such as heart rate monitors or water packs for running. You can make the additional purchases if you want, but it's not 100% needed. You could spend a fortune on other running equipment. Do your research and ask around before buying additional equipment.

Time to Run

Now it's time to lace up those shoes and start running. Remember to check out the marathon plans we linked above. Always have a plan when training for a marathon. If you are unsure about where to start, you can always hire a personal trainer. Your personal trainer will be with you every step of the way from start to finish.
