I believe that every student is different in how they retain information and learn the best and quicker most efficient way . Some are more visual, others verbal, or a mix of both when it comes to learning a new language. My first step is to figure this out whether by asking, or if students don't quite know, we'd figure it out together by using both ways.
I like to start with the Alphabet and making sure the pronunciation is acquired before getting into any kind of grammar work. Getting used to hearing a new language will benefit later more as of they will pick out words in the sentences and start understanding more and more.
Then in the mean time, and very slowly I like to add the grammar. The boring and dry part of the language. But it's a must.
Keeping it more casual, and more conversational and very much school class like. Unless... that's how the student learns the best.
Adapting to students needs are the most important in helping them learn a new language, or really.. anything.
I grew up in Hungary where I finished my Masters degree in Geography with a GIS major. I've been also a national level swimmer and swim coach for over 10 years now. I have decided that I would like to use my teaching/coaching skills and apply it to teaching the beautiful and unique language I've been given as my native language to those eager to learn it.
I also have a Bachelor degree in Kinesiology and currently coaching swimming at a local club in Red Deer (AB).
