About Sally
I was the nerdy pre-med student in college, so I have taken many advanced Chemistry, Math and Biology courses and graduated with a 3.8 GPA from VCU.
I was a pre-calculus teaching assistant for 4 semesters, and I have tutored well over 200 students in my weekly help sessions. Being a teaching assistant helped me discover my passion for teaching and explaining difficult concepts.
I do have a fun side, so I can make learning fun too! (I used to work at Disney World, so I believe I can make anything sound exciting, and I'm also great with kids!).

First, I like to gauge where the student's knowledge level is at with the subject they are struggling with. I'll start with simple questions and examples and see how much they can get through on their own.
I believe students respond the best when every detail is written out and the steps are explained slowly and simply. I like to use a white board or marker on paper rather than just pointing at the problem and talking about it.
I believe it is necessary to explain the background and root of certain concepts, rather than saying "that's just how it is." For example, when teaching biological protein synthesis, instead of saying "this is step 1, then this is step 2,...etc." I explain why each step occurs in a particular order, taking the time to bring in each component and highlight their importance. I am familiar with many mnemonic devices to help with memorization of names and steps.
There are many ways to approach a single topic, and I am skilled at finding out what works best for individual students. For example, there are at least 4 different ways to teach Trigonometry, but it all depends on if the student is a visual, auditory or conceptual learner (or a combination).
Overall, I am very perceptive so I can tell how effective my strategies are, and when I need to re-explain something or change my approach.
