About Lauren

My B.S. in Secondary Science Education at the University of Denver included two full years of general and organic chemistry, plus coursework in biochemistry and environmental chemistry. I have been tutoring chemistry for 4 years across middle school, high school, and college first-year levels. I am especially effective with students who feel completely lost in chemistry — my approach of connecting every concept to a real-world story consistently helps frustrated students find their footing and actually start enjoying the subject. In 2022, I helped a high school junior raise her chemistry grade from a C- to a B+ over the course of one semester. In 2023, two of my AP Chemistry students scored a 4 on their exam after starting well below that level at the beginning of our tutoring work. I use color-coded molecular diagrams, visual reaction maps, and everyday examples in every session — because the clearer the picture, the faster the concept sticks. I love this subject, and I love watching students discover that they love it too.

Chemistry gets a bad reputation — and I think I know why. Too often it is taught as a list of formulas to memorize and equations to balance without ever explaining what any of it actually means in the real world. My lessons are the opposite of that. I always start with the story behind the science — why this reaction happens, what it looks like in real life, why it matters — and then we layer in the technical details once you have a picture to attach them to. For foundational chemistry I teach atomic structure, the periodic table and periodic trends, chemical bonding and molecular geometry, balancing equations, stoichiometry, solution chemistry, thermochemistry, chemical kinetics, equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle, acid-base chemistry, and electrochemistry. For AP Chemistry students I work through the full AP curriculum with particular focus on quantitative problem-solving and free-response writing skills. In organic chemistry, I teach mechanisms as logical stories rather than isolated facts to memorize — once you understand nucleophiles and electrophiles, every reaction starts making sense on its own. We cover functional groups, IUPAC nomenclature, reaction mechanisms (SN1, SN2, E1, E2, addition, elimination), carbonyl chemistry, and stereochemistry with clear visual diagrams every step of the way. Electrochemistry lessons cover galvanic and electrolytic cells, redox reactions, standard reduction potentials, and the Nernst equation — always with real-world connections like batteries and fuel cells. Biochemistry sessions explore enzymes, metabolic pathways, DNA chemistry, protein structure, and cellular processes in a way that shows how chemistry is literally what keeps you alive. And food chemistry — one of my personal favorites — makes everything click: why toast browns, how bread rises, what an emulsifier does, and why cooking changes texture at a molecular level. Chemistry is everywhere. My job is to help you see it.
