About Victoria
Teaching Spanish to me is about more than just mastering vocabulary and grammar; it’s about fostering genuine communication skills and cultural understanding that empower students to connect with the world around them. I emphasize a communicative approach that prioritizes meaningful interaction, encouraging students to use Spanish naturally from day one. Whether through conversational practice, immersive role-play, or authentic listening exercises, I design lessons that mirror real-life scenarios to build practical fluency. I integrate grammar instruction seamlessly into these activities, helping students see how rules function in everyday communication rather than as abstract concepts. Culture is a cornerstone of my teaching, where I introduce students to the diverse traditions, history, and social nuances of Spanish-speaking countries through multimedia, literature, and discussions. I believe that when students relate personally to the culture, their motivation and retention increase significantly. To accommodate diverse learning styles, I use a mix of visual aids, technology tools, interactive games, and hands-on activities that make lessons dynamic and accessible. One of my proudest achievements was guiding a student preparing for study abroad who overcame language barriers and cultural shock to thrive in a Spanish university setting. Ultimately, my goal is to inspire students to embrace Spanish not just as a subject, but as a vibrant, living language that enriches their personal and professional lives.

For me, teaching Spanish is about awakening curiosity, building empathy, and helping students find their voice in another language. I believe that fluency is not a destination, but a process of exploration—and I guide students through that process by prioritizing comprehension, communication, and cultural awareness.
I use Spanish consistently in the classroom, but always in ways that feel supportive, not overwhelming. Through images, gestures, and repetition, I ensure students feel safe enough to experiment and grow. I embed grammar into real communication: instead of drilling the conditional tense, we imagine future goals or describe ideal vacations. Instead of isolated vocabulary lists, we engage in projects where words are used with purpose—planning community events, writing reviews, or interviewing classmates. I emphasize global awareness by bringing the Spanish-speaking world into class through film, news, literature, and virtual exchanges.
Students learn to appreciate the complexity of language as they explore its connections to race, history, music, and identity. One of the most rewarding projects I’ve led was a unit on migration stories, where students listened to real testimonies, reflected in journals, and wrote their own “border-crossing” narratives in Spanish, imagining themselves in someone else’s shoes. It was powerful, personal, and transformative. I also believe in flexibility—some students thrive through conversation, others through writing or visual projects—and I adapt to their strengths while challenging them to grow. Language is a living thing, and I aim to make Spanish come alive in every lesson.
