About Ben

- I'm a native English-speaker born in the U.S., but I grew up in Europe, studied Spanish in school, and visited Spain many times.

- I’ve visited Mexico, and I practice Spanish often with my Latin American friends and the general Spanish-speaking community here in Chicago.

- I’m able to switch between Castilian and Latin American accents/dialects easily.

- Native speakers of Castilian and Latin American Spanish have told me that my Spanish sounds native.

- I’ve been a classroom teacher and language tutor since 2008.

- I’ve successfully tutored students with learning, emotional, and behavioral difficulties.

- Every student who has met with me regularly has achieved their goals on or ahead of schedule.

About the lesson

- I deliver personalized lessons targeting the student’s particular needs, using learning methods that are most effective for that student.

- Apart from simply providing Spanish instruction, I help the student create structures in their week/day and physical space to allow for better learning. I’m eager for students to provide input in this process, rather than them simply taking my advice. The greater the ownership the student takes of their own learning, the better, since the ultimate goal in this relationship is to improve the **student’s** Spanish skills, not mine :)

- A tutoring season with any student begins with getting to know them better, letting them get to know me a little, building rapport and familiarity.

- I contact the student's classroom teacher and familiarize myself with the student’s course materials, assignments, online resources, etc. I also ask the for teacher's opinion of where to focus in the tutoring sessions.

- For younger students, I also make a point to have a longer conversation with the parent/s to learn as much relevant information about the student in advance (personality, learning style, etc.).
