Musicians and athletes are the same -- we coordinate our bodies and minds to create beautiful, complex and amazing experiences.
My teaching method integrates muscle training and technique with music theory, improvisation, composing and careful score study to build these mind-body connections. This allows my students to:
understand, enjoy and be confident in their playing;
build concentration, memory and body awareness; and
avoid physical and mental stress.
I focus on helping each student learn how to learn. Since each student is different, I often write exercises and study pieces to respond to an individual student's needs.
Concert pianist and music teacher with twenty years of experience. I studied at the Barcelona Conservatory as a teenager, and then took top scholarships and prizes at Harvard University and the Eastman School of Music. I've performed on piano, fortepiano and harpsichord in cities across Canada and the United States, and on radio (including multiple CBC appearances). I enjoy teaching all ages and levels, including adult beginners, and I have also prepared students for university study and professional careers.

Perfect! My son likes his lesson. His lesson style is passionate. Thank you, Max.
Max is perhaps the best possible instructor I could have picked after a ten year hiatus from the piano, which I had played for over a decade prior. It was especially important for playing the piano to be therapeutic for meâand Max supported me from day one. He never once shoehorned me into a prescribed curriculumârather, he was incredibly sensitive about designing one for me as we revisited some of my old repertoire alongside new, engaging pieces that challenged me at a comfortable pace. He did this while correcting old bad habits I'd developed, saving me from possible future injury. Max's passion for music history also meant that I could develop a better gut instinct for how I interpret piecesâand where to bend the rules! I am grateful to now play the piano with more mindfulness, technique, and musicianship than I had ever experienced growing up. For these reasons, whether you're beginning the instrument or returning after a while, I highly recommend Max as a piano teacher.
