Solar Music Academy provides a passionate, practical, and progressive learning environment that is focused on the student's unique needs. We use the music that the student is interested in as a vehicle for core musical, theoretical and technical skill development.
I am a creative and passionate musician who has an extensive background in Jazz, Contemporary, and Theatre music. I have used the music vocabulary that Jazz provides to compose, arrange, and collaborate with many different artists across many different styles and mediums. I value creating meaningful connections with musicians around me, and believe in adding to the cultural landscape through performing, composing, and teaching. I have participated in contemporary and jazz ensembles, done session work with artists, performed in orchestra and theatre pits, and taught for schools and freelance work. I want my work to make a positive impact on the people around me, and I am in constant pursuit of both technical excellence and creative ingenuity.
PROFESSIONAL MUSIC EXPERIENCE
Teacher, Christchurch School of Rock, January 2013 - May 2018,
Christchurch, New Zealand
My role was to create a passion-centric learning environment for primary and high school students. I educated students individually or in small groups. I taught a diverse demographic of children, am responsible for creating personalised curriculums according to the students needs and provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge to further their musical development. Interpersonal skills are of utmost importance when educating children as the personal rapport I developed with my students directly affects their achievements within music.
Performer, Freelance, 2008-Present
As a freelance performer, I am solely responsible for the promotion, distribution tuition and performance of music. As a performer, I would be required to fulfill a wide range of musical roles and be expected to maintain a high level of mastery on my instrument across a broad domain of genres and work with a diverse range of professional performers.
Music Tutor and Councillor, Long Lake Camp for the Arts, 2016,
New York, USA
As a music tutor I would tutor a wide variety of students at different skill levels. I would tailor the lessons to suit their needs and prepare them for performances in a contemporary setting as well as musical theater and orchestral settings. As a Unit leader I was responsible for the physical and emotional well being of the children put under my care. I would liaise with parents and ensure that their requirements and for their children were met with utmost professionalism. As the primary point of contact between parents, students and my superiors - interpersonal communication skills were exercised daily to ensure the well being of the child as well as the Camp and parent’s interests.

EDUCATION
University of Canterbury, BMUS in Jazz Music 2008 - 2011
Nick is a great teacher with a lot of experience teaching, performing and writing with multiple instruments.
He taught me guitar and music theory, giving me practical techniques that allowed me to learn to play the music I enjoy, improvise and jam with other musicians and begin to write my own music.
I'd recommend Nick for all age groups and skill levels. He is great at explaining ideas at all difficulty levels to make sure you can get playing and comfortable on your instrument as soon as possible!
Couldn't be happier!
Nick is a kind and patient teacher, who challenges me to be the best musician that I can be. He has an extensive knowledge of music technique, composition, theory, and history, and is well versed in many instruments. It's a pleasure taking class with Nick every week, and I would definitely recommend him as a teacher, regardless of your experience level. Looking forward to discovering more about the bass guitar from him!
I am currently taking bass guitar lessons with Nick, and I love every minute of our lessons! He is fun, knowledgable and really patient. I always come out of our lessons with practical tips and he has really helped me with my technique and musical understanding. What I especially love is how he uses the music that I really like - it makes me that much more motivated to practice. Highly recommended!!!!
