At the start, I would like to create a positive environment whereby the student know that he or she is free to ask whatever question they would like. I am there to support them, and to make sure the excel. I will then talk to the student about their strength and weaknesses on subject. I will then review teacher notes and ask the student what the teacher expects from the students.
Depending on the material, and the help needed, the methodology for each student will be different. This is because every kid learns differently, and it important to tailor lessons that best suit them. For example, if John learns better visually, I will make sure there are lots of visuals involved.
