Robert's Resume

1) Education:
B.Sc. (Agriculture) with majors in Soil Science and Agronomy (1978); and B.Sc. (Forestry) in 1994, both from University of Alberta, Edmonton. High school and Junior High School completed in Lusaka, Zambia at International School of Lusaka (1969 to 1971), Evelyn Hone College (1972), and University of Zambia (1972 to 1973). Also attended Eastglen Composite High School (1969) and Lawton Junior High School in Edmonton (1966 to 1969), during which I was awarded prizes for top scholastic marks at Lawton in both Grades 8 and 9. I attended Beverly Heights Elementary School in Edmonton (1961 to 1966), where I was accelerated to do both Grades 3 and 4 in one year.

During my professional career, I also completed short-courses in: interpersonal communication, technical writing, computer word processing, radio/tv broadcast writing, and public speaking at NAIT, University of Alberta, or through Alberta Government.

2) Working Career:
I currently own/operate an environmental consulting service (Soil & Forestry Consulting) and RGP Writing & Editing Services in Edmonton, Alberta since October 2015. I previously worked as an intermediate to senior project environmental scientist with Thurber Engineering Ltd. in Edmonton (2003 to October 2015), where I wrote and edited 200 technical reports in-house, as well as reviewed technical reports for content, done by other environmental consultants. I previously owned and operated a forestry and agricultural consulting service (Soil & Forestry Consulting) from 1994 to 2003 and also was technical expert and office manager for Symbiotech Research Inc. in 2001 to 2002. I served as an agroforester development worker in Nigeria, west Africa, with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) from 1988 to 1991; I was previously seconded by MCC to be the office manager for Lancaster County Conflict Mediation Centre in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA (1987 to 1988). I worked for Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AAF) in Lethbridge, as a Soil Specialist (1978 to 1987) and initially in 1978 as a farm labourer at Brooks Horticultural Research Centre.

I am in process of self-publishing "Enduring Art, Active Faith", a collection of short stories, essays, poetry and depictions of visual art, created by three generations of my family, through FriesenPress of Victoria, BC. I have written a novel about young expatriates coming of age in southern Africa during the early 1970s, called "Come By Here, My Lord", which is currently being edited by a professional and will be published by 2019.

I wrote approximately 30 essays on cross-cultural experiences while working with MCC in west Africa or in northeastern USA, several of which were published in MCC or other church magazines. While with AAF in Lethbridge, I was co-author of the provincial policy document Procedures Manual for Land Irrigability Classification in Alberta (1983) and also provided input on soil classification for a farm irrigation course (1984). I wrote over 3,000 irrigation assessment reports for water rights (Level II), plus seven land classification reports for development or rehabilitation of irrigation water delivery/drainage systems, and several associated saline/wetland inventories across southern Alberta.

3) Interests:
I am trained in conflict resolution (mediation, arbitration, negotiation and consensus building) and, as a volunteer with Edmonton Mediation & Restorative Justice Centre or Alberta Arbitration and Mediation Society, completed approximately 100 neighbourhood, victim/offender or commercial dispute cases as a volunteer mediator between 1992 an 2005.

I serve or have served as a volunteer board member on various social services organizations, including: Edmonton Mediation & Restorative Justice Centre (2001 to 2003), Edmonton Mennonite Centre for Newcomers (2005 to 2009), College of Alberta Professional Foresters Council (2011 to 2013), Forests Without Borders (2010 to 2017), North Edmonton Ministry of Mennonite Church Alberta (2011 to present), and Edmonton Ten Thousand Villages Society (2016 to present).

Robert's interview

QUESTION 01 | 05
When did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Robert — I have been interested in environmental sciences since I was a teenager living in Lusaka, Zambia. I enjoyed seeing how different plant species grew together. I have had an interest in creative writing, English language and communication since I was in high-school and encouraged to be a short story fiction writer by my Form IV (Grade 10) English teacher.
QUESTION 02 | 05
What makes you passionate about your subject?
Robert — I want to live in a healthy world, where humans and nature can thrive together. I see much beauty in nature and am encouraged when people, not only in Alberta, but in Africa try to be sustainable and to use appropriate technologies. I enjoy the fine arts, particularly writing, as a therapy and soothing to my soul in our often rushed and troubled world.
QUESTION 03 | 05
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Robert — I want to help other people for whom English is a second or third language, get more able to communicate in English in our dominantly English-speaking society. I have lived cross-culturally in Africa and in Latin America and needed to learn other languages in order to communicate, so I recognize the need. My most recent student wants to get better in English writing and works hard. He can bounce ideas off me and I can help him with grammar and structure but he does the work. I am patient, open-minded but also have some knowledge about authors, subject matter and ways of communication that my student appreciates.
QUESTION 04 | 05
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Robert — My grade 10 English teacher who encouraged me to keep writing in fiction. Some of my university professors who, despite way more learned and much older, took time to befriend me and other students with after-hours parties at Christmas and who kept in touch years after at professional functions. When I lived in Nigeria and needed to learn Hausa and Kanuri local languages, my teachers were very patient and kind, rewarded my efforts but always challenged me to try to hear and speak more, even when such was uncomfortable.
QUESTION 05 | 05
What are your keys to success?
Robert — My keys to success are: 1) keep trying to speak, read, and write in English, even when you find it difficult or frustrating. 2) Don't lose your own languages and cultures to become more fluent, but augment your background within the society you live in, to enrich both. 3) Always use correct grammar and spelling in written word and speak slowly, clearly and articulately with others. 4) Be patient and open-minded, both with yourself and others. 5) Be creative in thought but also deploy a sense of humour.
