When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by different cultures and languages. As a young teenager on my first trip outside of Canada, I recall clearly remembering trying to speak to people in Cuba and not being able to because of the language barrier. At that very moment, I decided I had to learn and perfect as many languages as I could because I wanted to be able to speak with other human beings that did not have the same language and culture as me. Since that trip, I have fostered a love of traveling and connecting with people as much as I can in every new place that I visit.

What makes you passionate about your subject?

I absolutely love being able to help people. When I help someone learn a new language, whether it is English, French or Spanish, I help them open doors to the possibilities that life offers has to offer them, whether that is personal or professional. Knowing languages allows a person connect with other human beings around the world, and being able to assist people to do this makes me feel like I am helping people.

What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I really love the fact that I can tailor each class based on the specific student's needs and goals and I can witness and enjoy the student's growth. I can give personalised classes and help each student grow to their best potential. It is not possible to give specialised attention to students when I teach my larger classes because one person just cannot give the same attention to 15 or 20 people at the same time.

Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was deeply inspired by my Grade 6 French teacher because she spoke four languages fluently. As a child, I looked up to her and simple could not believe how she was able to speak all of these languages so well. I aspired to be able to do the same thing. More than twenty years later, I have reached that goal and now teach three of the four languages that I speak.

What are your keys to success?

I have learned three languages after my mother tongue, and through this learning process, I have developed a deep understanding of what language learning entails. I know exactly what it feels like to learn a new language. I know that it is sometimes intimidating and frustrating. As a teacher and language learner myself, it is important to be understanding, kind and patient. Having the insight on what it is like being a language learner has given me the ability to be a successful teacher.
