At the outset, I try to get to know my students, gauging what they already know. Typically, I will ask the student what they're good at and what they most enjoy about the subject we're working on. I ask where they’re having trouble, focusing on what parts of class lectures they are having difficulty with and what types of questions they consistently miss on tests. Working with the student, we will create a mix of major and minor goals that can be achieved in a reasonable amount of time. With those goals in mind, I create a program that will best suit the students needs/goals bearing in mind a student's particular learning style. Remaining responsive to a student's progress, I try to create an environment that is supportive and challenging, encouraging a student to discover their own talent and ability.
If I am required to travel outside of Peterborough, I will negotiate a rate with students.
Practised law for a number of years. Have taught a variety of legal courses and developed curricula for a number of community and private career colleges in Ontario. Have taught hundreds of students over the years, from diverse backgrounds - many of whom have gone on to successful careers.
Recommendations from former students:
Ralph is an exemplary role model to all instructors and students alike. His vast knowledge of law combined with his genuine passion for teaching is quite impressive. He is very balanced and always maintains a friendly and respectful teacher-student relationship. Ralph consistently demonstrates incredible mastery of content and makes effective use of a variety of available materials. Ralph varies procedures in working with pupils of varying abilities and continuously provides motivation to extract maximum out of his students. (Kris Greenwood)
Going back to school after being out of that environment was a challenge however with the guidance and encouragement of Ralph I was able to flourish and excel in the legal field. Ralph was a patient, creative and informative facilitator that took a genuine interest in his students; giving us the gentle encouragement and knowledge to succeed in a very competitive work force. Ralph routinely spoke to each student, providing the invaluable direction and encouragement that was needed to work in a successful law firm. When I left the umbrella of Ralph’s guidance I felt ready to take on the world. I am currently part owner and operator of my own immigration consulting firm and attribute much of my preparedness for this business to Ralph. (Elizabeth Smith)
