About the lesson
I see mathematics as the combination of intuitive art and rigorous craft, both of which I teach. I believe in the idea of breaking down each idea into simple, understandable pieces that harmoniously come together. My methodology begins with a free "Lesson 0" to determine a student's background and goals.
After that, there are three areas in which I can help. Firstly, I help students with the grades 8-12 Ontario/IB/AP math curricula:
- Grade 8 Mathematics
- Grade 9 Destreamed Mathematics
- Grade 10 Principles of Mathematics
- Grade 11 Functions
- Grade 12 Advanced Functions
- Grade 12 Calculus and Vectors
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Mathematics
- Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus
Secondly, I help students to learn how to solve creative problems from algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and number theory in order to train for math contests (Waterloo CEMC, CMS COMC, AMC). Finally, for students who are ready, I teach how to do proofs in order to prepare for university.
I assign homework and provide detailed feedback on it. I teach using an interactive pen tablet and screen-sharing via an online video platform called Zoom. I am available via email and text. Please note that I only take on students who are seeking long-term tutoring, meaning at least for a semester, in order for our work together to produce a real transformation.
- All Levels
Academically, I graduated from the University of Toronto in mathematics, with membership at Trinity College. While in university, I was a teaching assistant and grader for an online education company. At the time, I also received two prestigious research grants and presented papers at several conferences. In my senior undergraduate year, I was elected as the President of the student body's Mathematics Union.
After graduation, I joined a world-class education company full-time in San Diego, California. At this company, I spent four years on teaching hundreds of successful students in around a dozen courses, developing the curriculum for an advanced math contest preparation course, and being the direct manager of a team of over 500 educators.
Currently, I am the owner of Existsforall Academy, which is a school of mathematics. In my spare time, I serve the mathematical and problem-solving communities in Canada. For example, I sit on the University of Waterloo's committee for developing their Problem of the Month. Until recently, I was a guest editor at the Canadian Mathematical Society's problem-solving journal, Crux Mathematicorum. I have also taught several extracurricular enrichment courses (on puzzles, math contests, and basic computer science theory) for school students at the University of Toronto's outreach program, Math+. Finally, I had the privilege of being a trainer of Team Canada for the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2022.
Perfect! Samer was very helpful and knowledgeable and quickly got on a call to help. Thank you Samer!
Perfect! It's lucky to have a teacher like Seraj. Time is precious for students, it will be a pity if you miss the best study time. A right teacher is the most important thing when I want to choose the teacher for my son. In Seraj's introduction, he mentioned that he would take the time to correct students' homework, and I realized that he might be the teacher I was looking for. The facts did not disappoint me. Seraj is a very responsible teacher, and he always takes time to grade and give specific advice. I never worry about his professional level, he has enough ability and knowledge to do his job. I respect him for his teaching attitude, punctuality, seriousness, clarity, his own teaching philosophy and experience. He made a study plan according to my son's situation, and I trust him. Maybe I could find someone who was good at math, but I don't think there are many teachers like Seraj who are both responsible and good at teaching.
Perfect! Without a doubt Seraj is one of if not the best tutor for Mat102. His explanations are exceptional and easy to understand. If you are confused or don’t understand a topic he is willing to re-explain it in a way that you do. When completing homework and asking for feedback on it he will always tell you what you did correct and incorrect as well as give you a really detailed explanation on it. Overall, I would recommend Seraj to anyone who is looking for a tutor that is willing to go above and beyond for their students.
Perfect! Seraj is the third tutor we’ve hired to help our son with middle school maths. We feel we’ve finally found in Seraj the professional, patient, supportive, and dedicated tutor that we’ve been hoping for. My son is starting to find the confidence in his maths skills that has always eluded him and Seraj’s patient teaching and positive reinforcement is a large part of that. Many thanks, Seraj.
Perfect! Seraj has been my son's university first-year math proof tutor for the past five months. Excellent tutor who clarifies things and is willing to go over concepts and topics several times! Explains complex problems in such a way that you can understand the components and apply them to a wide range of problems. Overall, I strongly recommend Seraj!
- See the response Seraj : The student and I have been working together in the area of university-level mathematical proofs. This includes logic, sets and other structures, properties of functions, induction, divisibility, and more. He has improved in knowledge and problem-solving skills since we first started working on this material.
Perfect! Very good I understood alot from his teaching, professional stays in touch. I recommend him.
- See the response Seraj : Mohammed and I are working through the material of the Ontario Grade 11 Functions course. He is good at grasping what I am teaching so we can cover a good amount of ground during each lesson. I look forward to continuing to work with him.
Perfect! My kids were enjoying Seraj's lectures. He has a solid math background, and especially in math contests. His materials are structured logically, and the lessons are easy to follow. We liked his teaching approaches.
- See the response Seraj : The kids are very intelligent and motivated. They have excellent mathematical skills already, so it is a pleasure to teach them further ideas to cultivate their interest.
Perfect! Broad scope of knowledge and topics, intuitive and detailed.
- See the response Seraj : The student is a high performer. He is dedicated to practicing on a weekly basis. He understands everything taught and contributes original ideas of his own. Overall, he is a pleasure to teach.
Perfect! Very happy with Seraj. He was well prepared for each session. Very patience, offered additional practice questions along with time management tips for exams. Highly recommended.
- See the response Seraj : The student is hard-working and industrious. Over time, his mathematical skills improved greatly. He is now very capable of writing mathematical proofs, which is the subject in which I instructed him. If I had a make a suggestion for improvement, it would be to review exponent rules for the future, and to think about when to consider a mathematical expression to be a block-variable.

The lessons were very clear, and direct, and enhanced my logic and mathematical skills. The instructor was knowledgeable, friendly and patient, which are great qualities to look for in tutors. The overall experience was very optimized for maximum results, in both productivity and clarity.
The general process and structure to tackle each kind of problem were understandable and allowed me to properly outline all of my solutions. In a week's time, we were able to cover new content, tackle problem set questions, and practice rigorously through textbook questions. The efforts go beyond the class, especially when receiving detailed feedback for my homework submissions, which helped me correct some of my mistakes. Without this experience, I would have lacked a lot of techniques, practice, and logical thinking to take on university math. This is a great supplement to the university instruction, and will only help you get further.
Seraj's lessons are packed with exciting concepts and interactive problem solving sessions. He can be very patent when I struggle and take the time needed to understand my train of thoughts and encourage me to ask questions. His teaching style allows him to address any of my confusions immediately, which I find extremely helpful for internalizing the first principles and developing further derivations!
I enjoyed listening to Samer Seraj's lectures - his materials are structured logically and the lectures are easy to follow. I liked his way of approaching these materials which strike a balance of breadth, depth and applicability to solve real problems.
I took Mr. Seraj's Introduction to Algebra course on Art of Problem Solving back in 2016. I've just started college, and I still have fond memories of my time taking his class. He is knowledgeable and very supportive of his students. Moreover, he is very passionate about teaching mathematics and does an amazing job helping students understand difficult concepts. I would definitely recommend choosing him as a teacher!
As I watched Seraj’s multi-colour chalk work, I realized what makes a great math teacher and what it means to be passionate about an academic subject and education. Seraj has been my close and long-time friend since 2011 back in my first year of undergraduate studies at the University of Toronto. Regardless if it’s an academic presentation for the university’s department or informal lectures for his friends, Seraj always gives his first-class quality teaching. His specialty is in making complicated topics in mathematics easy to understand and fun! He is good at combining clear instructions with colourful board sketches and really helping his students visualize and internalize abstract concepts in math. Seraj always has a way of making his class lively through interactive examples, analogies and humour. I had the fortune of being his practice subject when he did his lecture preparations --- And behold! His one-on-one lecture sessions were one of a kind. It felt like you were reading a good novel where you play the detective! Seraj has a magical way of drawing out the knowledge from your brain and making you realize the proofs or formulas yourself as if everything was intuitive! So if you want to attend a math class feeling smart and walk out even smarter, Seraj is the best tutor you can ask for!

When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Mathematics has been my chief interest since I was quite young. There were two critical events that made me decide to pursue math as a profession. Firstly, I was introduced to math contests run by the University of Waterloo CEMC and the Canadian Mathematical Society, which led to my qualification for the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad in my senior year of high school. Secondly, as a teenager, I read The Man Who Knew Infinity, which is a biography of the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, as well as parts of Euclid's ancient Elements of Geometry.
What makes you passionate about your subject?
My love for math comes from two sources: my desire to understand the interplay of intuitive truth and rigorous truth, and my attraction to symmetry. When I read Eucid's Elements of Geometry as a high school student, it established within me a deep yearning for verifying truth with certainty that is as close to being absolute as possible; when I read about Ramanujan's blinding flashes of insight, it made me wonder if ordinary people such as myself could also learn to intuitively sense mathematical truth. Secondly, math is full of amazing scenarios of invariance or symmetry, where a property remains true despite changes in its environment. This idea of changelessness amidst change is very attractive to me.
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
As a teacher, I have an opportunity to pass on, not only mathematical knowledge but a mentality of pursuing the truth. While the concrete subject that I teach is math, it is a medium for teaching general problem-solving skills, inductive and deductive skills, and critical thinking skills. I also emphasize the interplay of intuition and rigour in my teaching through a variety of techniques such as visualization. What makes me a "Superprof" is that I seek to instil and have succeeded in instilling this mental framework in my students.
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
I had the immense privilege of going to a good high school and great university. Years after graduation, I am still in touch with one of my school teachers. In university, I had the opportunity to do research with three professors and coauthor a paper with one, the latter of whom is still a good friend. In addition, I enjoy reading books by or about mathematicians who serve as examples to me. I was especially influenced by problem-solving books written by George Pólya and Paul Zeitz.
What are your keys to success?
I believe that the keys to success lie in a few principles: Be intensely curious, be competent, be accountable, and make friends with people who have those three qualities. In addition, it is a good idea to do work in the intersection of what interests you, where your skills lie, and what people value. Finally, sleep adequately, eat well, and exercise.
