First-year engineering student in Cambridge, Ontario, who gives lessons in math, physics, chemistry, and French, to high school and elementary school students

Methodology

My teaching methodology often includes visualization. I take the original approach and have the student visualize it, and draw a picture if that would help. This helps the student remember how to approach the subject, and also helps them understand the subject. I then find practice questions to ensure that they understand.

Background

I am a first-year student at Queen's University (online) completing a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. I've been tutoring since I started high school, with around five different mentees. I kept an above-90 average all through secondary school, taking mostly science and math courses, as well as keeping up with extracurriculars such as field hockey, boxing, and arts.

Eleena's interview

QUESTION 01 | 05
1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Eleena — I've always had an interest in it, maths and sciences come easy to me since I'm very left brain-oriented and I like the logic of these subjects. As for French, I was taught both English and French at an early age, so I'm bilingual and love to share my knowledge of the French language with others.
QUESTION 02 | 05
2. What makes you passionate about your subject?
Eleena — Science and math help to explain the way the world works, and I think that's really important, and enlightening. French is just a beautiful language!
QUESTION 03 | 05
3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Eleena — I love being able to share my knowledge of the world with others and watching them slowly learn and understand things more as I work with them.
QUESTION 04 | 05
4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Eleena — I've had numerous teachers who inspired me throughout my education, but especially my physics and chemistry teachers in eleventh grade. My physics teacher, M. Bausmer, pushed me to be the strongest I could be, and challenged me in every way he could. He supported me outside of school when I was going through some tough times, and made sure that I always had everything I needed. My chemistry teacher, Mrs. Clifford, was the one to really get me interested in chemistry and she's the reason I'm starting a chemical engineering program at Queen's University this year. She recently finished her final chemotherapy treatment due to breast cancer and she's always inspired me as a woman in science and a strong educational figure.
QUESTION 05 | 05
5. What are your keys to success?
Eleena — My keys to success would be perseverance and organization. I'm one of those people who keep really detailed, colourful notes, and has a planner and calendar on hand at all times, and I find it really helps me succeed in school, and in life. As for perseverance, I've had to show a lot of it since I came from a tough spot in life and have once again found myself in a tough spot, but I know I have to keep my head up.
