About Dean
Guitar tuition to all ages in all styles from beginner to professional.
I am a professional guitar player, guitar instructor, band member, songwriter and touring artist. I have dealt with all aspects of the music industry from professional studio recording to rehearsal to live performance including extensive touring experience.
I firmly believe that the best approach to teaching is on a ‘friend to friend’ basis, as this relaxes the student and gives them confidence, which in turn greatly improves their learning curve. Basically, I just love playing guitar, hanging out with other musicians no matter what age and skill level, and passing on and sharing as much musical knowledge as possible.

My name is Dean Gibney. I am 51 years old and I am from Liverpool UK. I began playing guitar at the age of 10, being naturally drawn towards a career in music due to my dad's
continuous piano playing and teaching. I soon adopted an ‘at least five hours per day’ practice schedule, and although I played in several bands with friends, I waited until I was 17 before my first live performance.
At this time, I also enrolled at Wirral Metropolitan College in Liverpool to further my musical academic training. This resulted in GCSE and A Level Music (which are formal qualifications in UK) Grade A, and a Guildhall College Diploma in Light Music which was actually an intense two-year course in advanced music theory. I then went on to obtain my Bachelor of Art Degree in Popular Music from The University of Liverpool in 2003.
Whilst giving private guitar tuition from the age of 15, I also taught at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for the Performing Arts), known as the Paul McCartney College, for several years from the age of 19. This included Rock Summer School and as LIPA is an International College, I ended up teaching a class of fifteen Japanese rock guitarists, that couldn’t speak any English, intense metal guitar techniques!
In 1998 I formed my band Twin Method with local friends from Liverpool. After touring the UK for several years our lucky break came in 2002 when we recorded an EP with Producer/Guitarist Logan Mader (ex-Machine Head/Soulfly) in Hollywood. We then went on to secure a record deal with Crash Music and recorded our debut album, The Volume of Self in 2005, also produced by Logan. Twin Method then continuously toured America from
2005-2009 with bands such as Medication, Drowning Pool, Soil, American Head Charge, Type O Negative, and the 2007 Family Values Tour headlined by Evanescence and Korn.
In 2009 I emigrated to the US and became a full time Guitar Instructor at CMI (Colorado Music Institute) in Denver. This included private and group tuition to all ages in all styles of
music. I was also one of the instructors for the summer band/rock camp for three years.
In 2012 I moved to Los Angeles and I have continued to further my music career as an active member of several bands in song writing and touring roles. I also continue to give private guitar tuition to students of all ages and musical styles. I firmly believe that the best approach to teaching is on a ‘friend to friend’ basis, as this relaxes the student and gives them confidence, which in turn greatly improves their learning curve. Basically, I just love playing guitar, hanging out with other musicians no matter what age, and passing on and sharing as much musical knowledge as possible. As I stated, I started teaching guitar at the age of 15, so I had to quickly develop my skills which I still hold to today. My most memorable teaching experience however would undoubtedly be my time at LIPA, because despite the language barrier I realized that music is a true passion no matter where you are from. I am now focused on spreading my musical passion and knowledge to others through song writing, performing and teaching.
