Honours English BA at UBC. Learn the Principles of Academic literature, Research and Creative writing for A's on University level Essays. Editing, Exam Prep, and Lessons.

About the lesson

My methodology is to work with each individual student, helping them learn by working with their current skill set and ensuring they have a secure foundation and knowledge base.

For high school and undergraduate students, understanding the required structure and expectations at the given level is extremely important. While working through essays, I will give examples and suggestions for ways to improve writing. If a student is not familiar with a certain type of essay, I will also go work through the steps so the current, and future essays, will have a strong foundation.

In my experience, planning before writing is also extremely important. If students have any type of writing assignment where they're not yet sure what they want say, we begin by also making a plan for that.

I always aim to explain any edits we make thoroughly, I want students walk away understanding the changes we've made. That way, you'll be better equipped for the next assignment. The end goal will never not be to improve so much that you won't need anybody's help in the future!

**I'm currently quite booked but respond fairly quickly. If you have an assignment due soon, it's best to inquire sooner rather than later just to make sure I can get to it.

About Sherry

I’m a student at the University of British Columbia, double majoring in English and Political Science. I have extensive experience reading and grading essays, privately tutoring for university students, and highschool students, who go on to achieve A's in their classes. On average, my students who have previously taken English improve their grade by 15%.

I received a 5 on both my AP Literature and Language exams, and am very familiar with the content in both. At UBC, I worked as a paid researcher for the knowledge deficit in Game Studies, and am consistently performing at the top of my class. Understanding the psychology behind what teachers and professors seek in a paper is knowledge only gained with extensive experience, which is information I seek to pass on.

    1. When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

I’ve always been pretty adept at the arts, and so I began tutoring when a family friend requested that I help their daughter. I think that English is really interesting and nuanced, it helped build critical thinking for sure and forces you to map out your arguments in a clear and concise way. Over the past couple years, I’ve realized that I actually enjoy reading and editing writing! I began tutoring more, and during the pandemic, I also volunteer edited for high school students as support for their AP exams. Right now, I'm literally looking into being an editor after graduation, which is fitting.

    2. What makes you passionate about your subject?

I love reading. When I was really young I used to devour books and go to the library multiple times a week. The coolest library I've ever been to has to be the Austrian national library, it looked like something straight out of Disney. Obviously, I don't visit my local library to borrow books as much, but I still read a ton. My favourites are contemporary fiction or peer-reviewed articles on interesting books from the UBC library. I’m not super ‘passionate’ about the language and research side of English, but I do really enjoy rhetoric as a topic, and talking about how everything around us exists to convince us of something.

    3. What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

I guess I like the methodological approach to essays. You read it, and if it doesn’t make sense, then you fix it. It’s a bit like a puzzle and you have to carve out the pieces yourself and force them to fit, even if they don’t at the moment. It’s a bit different of an editing process for creative and journalistic pieces, the structure is definitely not as rigid but still needs to be cohesive. I feel like even if a piece of writing is already good, it can always get better, so an extra set of eyes can really help you pinpoint any issues. I really thrive off the high of seeing a piece of writing before and after the editing process, and always get overly invested in the grade received for it.

    4. Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I don’t have one specific English teacher that has kind of ‘defined me,’ but I along the way I’ve definitely had a couple of interesting figures. In high school, my Grade 9 English teacher is the first one who really engaged me in a topic, we did Romeo and Juliet and I remember acting out the scenes in class and it being really funny. In Grade 12, My AP Literature and Language teachers were really supportive. So much so that I ended up receiving the AP Language book award, which is just the highest mark in the grade (that’s when I decided I wanted to study English post-secondary). My first English professor in University was probably the final important figure thus far. We had a really small class, which is super uncommon for university, and so we all ended up having really great conversations. She was just so clever and would quote random philosophers and explain relationships with graphs and charts, that really engaged everyone in the conversation. I still quote some of her tricks and lessons to this day.

    5. What are your keys to success?

I think support is really important. Whoever it may be - a friend who you always turn to for help, a teacher that’s really supportive, a family member who is encouraging… I think if you have enough confidence in yourself, you can literally achieve anything from just sheer willpower. But you need that support and confidence first.
