About Christopher

When I was in school, I found Irish extremely difficult. I had never been taught the basic foundations of the language properly, which meant I struggled for several years.

When I began my Leaving Certificate course, I realised that I needed a top grade in Irish. I worked closely with my teacher and focused on building the fundamentals that had been missing earlier in my education. Once those basics were in place, everything became much easier. With targeted one-to-one support and a structured approach to exam preparation, my grade improved dramatically from a pass to a H1, including 98% in the oral exam.

This experience completely changed how I approach teaching. I understand exactly why many students struggle with Irish and where the gaps in understanding usually occur. My goal is to rebuild those foundations first, then develop exam technique so that students can approach the course with confidence.

I have now been giving Irish grinds for over four years, working with both Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate students at all levels. My lessons focus on:
• mastering the key grammar foundations students often miss
• improving oral fluency and confidence
• building exam-ready notes for essays, comprehensions and poetry
• developing clear strategies for the oral and written exams

I also work as an exam corrector for the Institute of Education, which gives me insight into how answers are assessed and what examiners are looking for.

Lessons are typically conducted online using Zoom with collaborative whiteboards, allowing us to work through exercises and notes together in real time. I also create a shared Google document with each student, where all notes, corrections and model answers are stored so they can revise efficiently between lessons.

My aim is simple: to make Irish clear, structured and manageable so that students can achieve the highest grade possible.

Details

Hourly base rate is €50/hr. Travel fee is €15. This fee covers the cost of going to your house as well as time lost due to the time travelled.

Rates can be negotiated for larger group sessions. I currently give weekly group lessons. Largest group is 5 people at the moment but I can do larger. An example but not a binding offer of a group rate is: for 5 students, the per person hourly rate is €15.

Note that I tend to offer free practice oral exams/sessions when I’ve the time available. I find this encourages the students more as they know I’m giving the time purely for them.
