About Fernanda

I am a musicologist with an interdisciplinary profile. This may sound intimidating, but deep down it means that I am a very curious person who seeks answers to big questions. For me, musicology has been the discipline that has helped me to connect music with other areas of human knowledge. I studied for a Bachelor's degree in Humanities at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) in Mexico and a Master's degree in Musical Studies at the Universidad Veracruzana, where I graduated with a thesis on the generalities of Mexican composer Gustavo E. Campa (1863-1934) music criticism. I am currently finishing my PhD in Music at the University of Southampton in England, where I am writing a thesis on the ideas about progress and civilization that Mexican intellectuals promoted in the music criticism of the second half of the 19th century. I am also a trained violist, I play a little piano and I am learning the basic chords on the guitar to accompany myself when singing. I speak English, a little German and French.
I have taught music history at the undergraduate level and literature history at the high school level. I find it regrettable how the educational system has reduced the diversity of history to political issues, relegating the cultural and artistic part to a paragraph in the textbook. I believe that history should be useful and fun knowledge that allows us to understand our present, and what better way to understand it than through the history of music.
Many people believe that because I have an education in what is called classical, academic, Western and/or European music, they think that I do not enjoy other musical genres and musics from other cultures. Nothing could be more wrong than that. I also have a critical stance towards the Eurocentrism with which the history of Mexico and Latin America has been written.

• The class adapts to your needs and/or interests.
• Access to a syllabus with general and specific topics on the History of Western music, spanning from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Includes the History of Music in Mexico for those interested in this area of knowledge.
• Playlists with the music that we will be studying.
• I relate music themes with literature, art and cinema.
• I believe that developing critical thinking in Humanities and Arts is fundamental. For this reason, part of the sessions focus on listening to pieces and discussing the topic to which the music relates so that the student develops this skill.
• Development of intellectual/academic skills: strategies for reading, organizing information, studying, writing essays and taking exams. (These skills are not limited to an educational system such as high school or higher education, so they can be developed at an advanced age.)
