Throughout years of taking math courses and tutoring peers, I have found that the only way to feel comfortable and confident with the material is to truly understand the "WHY" behind the question or method. After a student can recognize the intent behind a question, like with most problems, the solution becomes quite clear.
Thus my usual approach to helping a student is as follows:
1. Identity the structure and solution path of a problem
2. Cover and understand any and all important topics needed to solve the problem
3. Walk through the initial problem step by step and arrive at the solution with the student
4. Solve similar problems providing guided help only when need
Additionally, I believe it is important to understand that everyone has a unique way of learning and digesting information. So I try to adapt my style of tutoring to the student based of how the student learns best.
