Licensed Engineer Offers Online Math Lessons for K-12 and University First Year Students. Graduate of the University of Toronto Engineering Science Program and the International Baccalaureate Program

Methodology

My previous clients have noted that I approach teaching with an analytical mind influenced by my experience as a power system engineer in Ontario. In my classroom environment, I strive for three outcomes: obtaining the trust of my clients, committing to their learning objectives with patience, and demonstrating attention to detail to foolproof my instruction.

Over a cumulative period of 5 years, I had the opportunity to teach students from ages 4 to 18 in classes of 1 to 30 students; through these experiences, I have developed an aptitude for adjusting my instruction to account for differences in age, learning styles, and skill levels. Numerous times, my classes have been praised for having an excellent learning culture, lots of engagement, and most importantly, a safe environment in which students are not afraid to make and learn from their mistakes.

If you are interested in enlisting my services, you can expect the following:
1. A free, no-commitment consultation via Zoom videoconferencing that may last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes. Through this consultation, I learn about my client’s needs and answer any of my client’s questions. My findings from this consultation form the basis for a comprehensive lesson plan tailored to the client’s needs that I will develop on my own time. My previous clients have signed on for a minimum of 5 hours of instruction; however, there are some who have continued with my lessons for as long as 50 hours, having committed to 5 consecutive blocks of ten-hour lesson plans. After the consultation, clients may choose to not proceed with any lessons or indicate an initial number of instruction hours for which they would like to sign on. There is no commitment to sign on for any classes at the end of the consultation; clients may choose to deliberate for any period after the consultation.

2. By default, my lesson plans would be inspired by a structure that complements the school math curriculum that the client must learn. Based on the client’s specific needs, I can expand on the basic curriculum or drill down on specific mathematics concepts. Some clients may require remedial assistance, homework help, or fast-tracking their learning, among other activities. Generally, I can cover any math course offered from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and parts of first and second year university math for engineers and non-engineers. The material can cover math at various levels including Applied, Academic, and International Baccalaureate Standard Level and Higher Level. High school courses can include but are not limited to Advanced Functions, Calculus & Vectors, Data Management and Statistics. University courses can include but are not limited to First Year University Calculus and depending on the syllabus, even Second Year University Calculus.

3. In each lesson, I like to start not necessarily with the mathematics concept, but the real-life application of the concept when applicable. As an engineer, I have always been interested in the application of a mathematics concept, because the relevance of a concept to one’s own life is what made the concept worth retaining in the first instance. After motivating the concept with real-life examples, I will expand the lesson to discuss the theory and apply the theory to sample problems that demonstrate true understanding based on first principles. Time permitting, I will also prescribe takeaway homework problems and questions that give my clients confidence in their ability to apply mathematics under test settings. Ultimately, I not only want to see my clients appreciate mathematics, but also succeed academically.

4. All my lessons can be recorded on Zoom if the client requests it. Then I can share the Zoom lesson recording with my client after the class is done. This way, even if the client feels uncomfortable with the subject matter when discussed in real-time with me, there is always the chance to revisit the material independently and ask any follow up questions in the next lesson. Of course, my goal is to ensure that the material is understood as it is introduced, but the recordings can remain an additional resource for my clients.

5. Interaction Logistics: Additionally, all the interactions we have on Zoom can be performed on a shared whiteboard on which both the client and I will be able to write; this way, I can see how the client approaches a mathematics problem and suggest changes to fix it in real-time. I will save the whiteboard notes in a personal google drive folder that will only be accessible to myself and my client. Another option can be to interact using Google Jamboard, another resource that will be in our shared drive. Alternatively, if the client is not comfortable with using the Zoom or Google Jam whiteboards, the client may choose to write on paper, take a picture of it, and upload it into the shared google drive. We can then bring up the picture in the shared google drive and discuss that work using Zoom's screen share options.

Hello!

I am an ESL instructor with an online agency that connects American English teachers to partner schools in China.

Charles was first introduced to me as my academic trainer and was responsible for helping me transition into the online ESL teaching environment.

Not only did he accomplish that, but he also went above and beyond to impart best practices, which had the wonderful effect of improving my booking rate with partner schools-- so I was working more, with more students, in more schools, on a regular basis.

Charles is especially helpful because he knows his material, can articulate areas of improvement with professional focus, and when he offers specific feedback on improving my teaching techniques after reviewing my lesson recordings, his suggestions benefit my teaching process and the children's learning outcomes.

His suggestions are always practical and they have helped me anticipate and navigate challenges that are unique to online classroom environments. I am now also considered a VIP high ranked teacher and I have Charles to thank for getting me started.

Charles is a very respectful, patient, trustworthy and even methodical in his teaching approach, which is in-line with his engineering background.

Charles is not only my mentor, but has also become my friend through this process.

If you want the best, I highly recommend Charles as a teacher with your organization, too!

My name is Martin Chijani and I am an electrical engineer. The IESO oversees and ensures the reliability of the power system in Ontario, Canada. I work along side Mr Charles Park who is also an electrical engineer.

In January of 2019 I was transitioned to a new function within the department. Charles helped me transition to my new role by giving me one on one tutoring, teaching me the new processes, demonstrating new software and walking me through new techniques.

My new functions are highly technical and complex. Charles was comprehensive, clear in his guidance and communication. He was also sympathetic and patient with me as a beginner while maintaining an engaging atmosphere. Charles would adaptively explain things to me switching between graphical, verbal and written methods of communication in a manner that was best suited for the subject matter he was teaching me. Charles also listened clearly to my questions before answering. He also showed patience with me when answering questions of information he had already given me.

With Charles’ help I was able to effectively transition into the new role smoothly. I still continue to benefit from the tips and training Charles provided me.

As the coordinator of the math tutoring service at a high school that offers the International Baccalaureate program, I had the privilege of working with Charles when he was a math tutor under my supervision. Right from the beginning, I could tell that Charles was extremely passionate about math and teaching others. He was extremely patient and able to effectively teach students with different learning styles by focusing on their individual needs. He was willing to work with students to develop a detailed learning plan and set goals to accomplish. He was always punctual, organized, and prepared for every session. He was even willing to take on extra tutoring sessions to help students in need! After a while, Charles became one of the most sought-after tutors within the group of 100+ tutors that I supervised. Students would specifically attend the sessions that Charles was in charge of in order to get his one-on-one attention. From my observations, I can say that students greatly benefited from Charles’ tutoring services and were able to see a positive reflection in their marks. If you are looking to build a strong math foundation or further enhance your mathematical problem solving skills, I would highly recommend Charles.

Charles and I have worked together on the same academic team for an online school. I have seen Charles teaching students aged 5 to 19 and I have seen him train fellow tutors who needed their style of teaching adjusted. Charles' talent and knack for teaching was recognized by the entire team to the point where Charles was asked to co-author the training material for all new teachers coming on board. Charles's teaching methods are both methodical and straight to the point. As a teacher and a mentor, I'd give Charles 5/5 rating. Highly recommend!!!

Charles Park, P.Eng.'s interview

QUESTION 01 | 05
1) When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Charles Park, P.Eng. — Over 20 years ago, I developed an interest in applying math to model and understand various real-life scenarios. My pursuit of math never stopped since then, and I eventually became licensed as an engineer that assists with operating Ontario's electrical power grid. I pursued this field because math underpins many essential services that society takes for granted today, and I wanted to develop myself into an individual who would enable such societal services while being rewarded for it.
QUESTION 02 | 05
2) What makes you passionate about your subject?
Charles Park, P.Eng. — I became passionate about math because it is one of the most elegant ways to describe how the world behaves in the manner it does. Not only was it elegant, but it also offered excellent career prospects with many in-demand jobs requiring the application of math.
QUESTION 03 | 05
3) What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Charles Park, P.Eng. — When I was first introduced to math in elementary school, I struggled a great deal with learning it. I had to apply myself diligently over several years, with the help of many excellent teachers, in order to grasp math in a more intuitive manner that allowed me to appreciate its elegance and relevance to our daily lives. In time, math came more naturally to me. As a tutor, there is no greater fulfillment than seeing others who struggle with math also learn to demystify it, make it their own, and potentially even change their lives by making a career out of it.

I differentiate myself as a "Superprof" with the comprehensive measures I take outside of lesson hours to tailor lesson plans and learning assessments that are conducive to my student's learning objectives. My in-lesson interactions with students provide me with useful information to help refine lesson plans for subsequent sessions. My previous students have noted that I spare no energy with being clear in my guidance and communication, switching between graphical, verbal, and written methods that are best suited to my student's unique learning style. I also prepare assignments that assess my students' learning, giving them a good gauge of the extent to which they have retained concepts that were already covered. Through these methods, I have developed a track record for enabling remedial math students to experience improvements by at least an entire letter grade.
QUESTION 04 | 05
4) Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.
Charles Park, P.Eng. — Over the years, I had many inspirational teachers in various subjects including English, Math, Science, and Economics. These teachers all had two things in common: they were extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject matter, and they demonstrated a great deal of personal interest in their students' development, taking the time to tailor lesson plans according to their students' needs. These are the qualities that I strive to emulate as a math tutor.
QUESTION 05 | 05
5) What are your keys to success?
Charles Park, P.Eng. — Beyond the deliberation that goes into developing my lesson plans and learning assessments, I strive to create a safe and patient learning environment in which my students are not afraid to make mistakes of any form. I always keep an open mind about my student's capabilities and view their mistakes as an opportunity for them to revisit the more fundamental concepts that they may not have learned properly beforehand. In my view, math is a very attainable discipline that can be mastered by initially practicing simpler concepts and exercising the diligence to build on concepts that have already been learned; this is a view that I would like to instill in all my students.
