Music instructor with 9 years of teaching experience gives creative piano and voice lessons in plateau, Montreal!

Methodology

For Piano lessons, I am perfectly comfortable teaching classical, modern, popular, folklore and film music (not Jazz!). However, I require my students to be willing to learn to read music properly as I don't teach/play by ear or chords only.
In my voice lessons, I mainly focus on how to properly warm up your body, breathe effectively, improve your vocal abilities and pitch, expand your range, and essentially project your natural and unique voice.
I work with a few method books and exercise banks (Alfred, Bastien, RCM, Hanon, Hal Leonard, Heizmann, Vaccai & more) based on the student's goal. Building on that, together with your suggestions we create your repertoire as we go.
Finally, my end goal is to enjoy the lessons, both learn from each other, and express ourselves with confidence, finding out what makes us special. :)

Background

I have been playing the piano for 22 years, and have been singing for 16 years now. After finishing my training at the conservatory of music, I started giving private piano, music theory and voice lessons 9 years ago and have worked with students from 4 years old to 75, in both private and group sessions, from complete beginner to advanced levels. I have prepared many students for recitals, musical theater, and group performances and do enjoy accompanying them on the stage if we have the chance!

I have had the opportunity to work with thriving music studios such as Studio Vivian, Sarv academy, and Pars institute in the past, and have the privilege of being a part of an amazing network of people who are passionate about music, knowledge, and having a good time!

Perfect! The lessons are fun and we laugh a lot. She is very precise in her instructions and sets the bar high for learning to play with good technique from the beginning. I appreciate her knowledge, and also flexibility.

Perfect! Kiana is very knowledgeable and has a great repertoire of techniques and trainings she picks from to better help her students.

She is perspicuous and has a very apparent passion for teaching.

As a complete beginner in singing, I was not particularly looking forward to sing in front of someone I had just met.
Kiana put me at ease and cheered me on. She is a big part of why I soldier on down the intricate path of singing.

Perfect! Kiana is great! She gets straight to the point and has a vast knowledge of exercises to pick from to help with many parts of the voice and singing. This is especially nice since she is able to change up the exercises so the lessons never get stale. I have never sung before, so I needed a ton of help with pitch, breathing, etc. I feel like every lesson with Kiana I have a mini breakthrough and my voice keeps improving week after week. I'm always looking forward to the next lesson!

Zach

Marina

Perfect! My first time taking singing lessons and honestly, couldn’t be happier! Kiana’s a great teacher with a deep understanding of methodologies, so she easily adapts her teaching to your level and sets off to make sure that you reach your goals. Super helpful in helping you understand your mistakes and very patient and enthusiastic. Would definitely recommend.

Ilyas

Albert

Perfect! Kiana is a phenomenal singing teacher. I am a guitarist/songwriter who has always felt hindered by my inability to sing (well). I felt that my lack of confidence in my vocal abilities always held me back as a musician and performer. Week by week, Kiana has been helping me gain that confidence by making me realize that I have what it takes to improve. Her exercises are always engaging, well-thought-out, and satisfying to complete. She is very patient and friendly, which makes the lessons fun and stress-free. She provides clear directions, motivation, and resources to help me practice on my own time as well. Overall, her lessons have helped me find my voice and enjoy music/songwriting just that much more! Highly recommended.

Perfect! Kiana is an excellent piano teacher. She is very competent, knowledgeable, friendly, patient, professional and extremely nice. She adapts the class based on your interest, level, and how you learn. She has a lot of experience teaching and of course playing the pioneer. I really enjoy classes with her and getting to know her. I am looking forward to my classes and my program with her.

Kiana's response

Diana is a super friendly, enthusiastic and creative person who is patient and willing to learn! She is a quick learner and asks challenging questions to satisfy her curious mind. I absolutely enjoyed our piano lesson.

Kiana's interview

QUESTION 01 | 05
When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Kiana — I started playing the Piano when I was 5. My dad bought me John Thompson's easiest piano course books and I finished them in a week. "Huh, I guess you're interested in Piano then!" he said. I went on to take classical piano lessons at the conservatory of music all the way as well as coaching myself for the next 21 years. In the meanwhile, I joined the youth choir and discovered I also enjoy singing, an interest that I developed more professionally by taking opera voice lessons and performing with several choirs and bands as soloist/vocalist. In my twenties, I developed an interest for other instruments such as Ocarina, Flute, Kalimba and Cello, as well as other genres like jazz, ambient, alternative rock, fusion and modern classical music.
QUESTION 02 | 05
What makes you passionate about your subject?
Kiana — Music is a part of my identity that never changes. It is my safe place in this bizarre world. I simply couldn't live without it. It might be the purest thing that we, as human beings, have ever created. There is no certainty in this world, but I could easily believe music is forever!
QUESTION 03 | 05
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Kiana — My true passion in life is creating knowledge, or passing it on so someone else can create it one day, or pass it along. It is this chain effect of knowledge sharing that makes my heart beat faster. That is why for me the most honorary work is to teach, because I believe education is the only thing powerful enough to save us all.
QUESTION 04 | 05
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Kiana — One of my university professors changed my view towards education and how we communicate in class. He used to mime, use peculiar visual aids, and give us temporary roles in class to showcase the power of knowledge communication. The next semester, I became his teaching assistant, learned how to go beyond traditional teaching methods and think bigger than institutional standards.
QUESTION 05 | 05
What are your keys to success?
Kiana — I believe "success" is a subjective and complex concept to define, as it is different for each one of us. For me personally, success is not about money, fame or power. It is knowing that I have reached my true potential and cannot do better. It is only then that I feel "happy" and satisfied with myself. Keys to achieving this would be to write down my vision/mission statement, learn more about myself everyday, accept my strengths and weaknesses, and come up with short term/long term strategies that will get me where I want to be while making sure I am enjoying my life!
