I start each topic by making the student read a paragraph of a passage. Then, I give feedback on their reading and ask a few questions to make sure they understood what it means. After that, I would either explain some of the grammatical rules present in the paragraph (if the focus was on grammar) or explain some of the writing techniques used in the passage and then practice them together (if the focus was on writing skills).
