Online Music Theory for all levels with an international Pro Musician and Performer

Methodology

Performing music is an amazing experience in itself, but music is also a language in itself. I believe that understanding not just HOW to play but WHAT is being played and WHY it sounds the way it does is integral to enriching the experience of the performer, and in enabling the performer to create even more amazing experiences for their audiences (see the linked YouTube video for an example; all of us on stage and in the band have trained in music theory!)

My lessons in Music Theory are not about answering questions correctly to gain a pass mark like they would be in school. My lessons follow chosen texts and workbooks, but go further by allowing the student to explore the context of the work they complete and HEARING what their work sounds like in a musical setting. We will explore WHAT is being written/played, HOW it is created and played and WHY it looks and sounds the way it does.
Whether you are taking your first steps into learning to read music, looking to learn more before beginning a university course or experimenting with a new and exciting hobby, everyone is welcome!

Access to and prior experience on an instrument is NOT required, but should you wish to utilise an instrument during your lessons feel free to ask. Lessons will primarily refer to the piano, but your instrument of choice can also be included.

Background

Hi! My name is Sam.

I am a musician, composer, multi-instrumentalist and entertainer from Western Australia. I have played and studied music for more than twenty years including a Bachelor's Degree in Jazz from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, and have loved every minute of it. I have performed and recorded professionally for more than a decade in all genres; from Samba to Swing, Music Theatre to Movie Music, Huge Orchestras to Hip Hop and everything in between.

As well as many hours spent on stage, I am a seasoned tutor and ensemble director. In almost a decade of teaching I have instructed over 500 children, school students and adults individually and in ensembles to share the experience and joy that is performing music.

I have made such a huge leap in musical progress since having Sam as a teacher which I can completely attribute to his outstanding musical finesse and knowledge as well as his ability to help me work towards my individual goals and improve specific weaknesses.

Not only is he an incredible educator but the encouragement and support I have received over the course of our lessons has made the learning process so fun and exciting.

I would absolutely recommend Sam to anyone seeking musical assistance of any sort!

Jordan

I have worked with Sam and can say that he is a SUPERB teacher! he understands how to teach music theory and sight reading, even if you're at a beginner level. I had trouble with basic sight reading (whether it be chords or melodies) and with his help, I noticed a progression in my speed and ability to sight read.

I would defiantly recommend Sam as a teacher!
