Online Piano Lessons From Award-Winning Teacher with Bachelor's Degree & 10 Years of Experience

Methodology

Hi there!

I mainly teach and perform classical music, but also enjoy teaching jazz and popular styles! I believe that musical progress and learning happens best when students are able to maintain a healthy balance between fun, creativity and focus during a lesson, so I encourage my students to explore music that they are passionate about!

I use the RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) and Conservatory Canada examination systems for late beginner to advanced students. For complete beginners, I use the Faber Piano Adventures Method books.
In addition, I make helpful worksheets and homework assignments for my students to supplement the books they are using.

Background

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Piano from the University of British Columbia, where I received the Catherine Cooke Topping Memorial Medal upon graduation. I also have an ARCT Performance Diploma in Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as performance certificates from the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

I have played piano for almost 16 years, and I started teaching in 2010. I have taught music with Beethoven at Home, Dominelli School of Music, Dauk Music, and Elite School of Music.

I am currently an Associate Instructor of Piano at Indiana University where I am also pursuing a Master's Degree in Piano!

Amanda's Resume

Biography:
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Amanda began her musical journey at the age of six. In 2013, she studied piano with Professor Emeritus Alexandra Munn, obtaining an RCM ARCT in piano performance and winning first place in the Alberta Provincial Piano Competition. In 2020, Amanda completed her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance at the University of British Columbia, where she received the Catherine Cooke Topping Memorial Medal upon graduation. She has performed in masterclasses for renowned pianists André Laplante, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Angela Hewitt, and David Jalbert.

A participant in local and national competitions, she was recently awarded second place in the Vancouver Women's Musical Society's Scholarship and third prize in the Canadian Music Competition. Further abroad, she was awarded Johann Strauss Foundation's Lotte & John Hecht Memorial Scholarship, which fully funded her studies at the Mozarteum's Sommerakademie in Salzburg, Austria. Other prizes include 3rd place at the BC Bösendorfer Competition and a performance opportunity at Landesakademie-Ocherhausen in Germany. She is a grateful recipient of the Ranald & Vera Shean Memorial Foundation, the Winspear Fund for Advanced Classical Musicians, and the Anne Burrows Music Foundation.

Amanda has ten years of experience teaching piano, and music theory, and is familiar with both the RCM, ABRSM, and Conservatory Canada examination systems.

She is an experienced performer, and has played piano and celesta with the UBC Symphony Orchestra, and has had performances as both a solo and collaborative pianist at the Vancouver Fairmont Hotel, Georgian Court Hotel, Alberta Pianofest, Live Better Homes, and the home of UBC President Santa Ono.

MANA

Perfect! Amanda is great. My son enjoys taking lessons with her. She is very professional and also very dedicated to her teaching role. We are glad we found her.

Amanda's response

In today's trial lesson, I heard Mana's son, Deon play through a piece that he had previously learned, as well as some new pieces (Beethoven's Für Elise) and scales (C major and G major). It was a pleasure to meet Deon and his parents and get a sense of what level he is currently at. I look forward to seeing you guys next week! Thank you! :)

Miao

Perfect! I really enjoyed the class with Amanda, she is super nice and helpful, lots of encouragement and happy to learn with her!

Amanda's response

The lessons with Miao went great! We chose to use the method book titled "Piano Adventures" (adult version, volume 1) for our lessons and also discussed some songs that Miao would like to work on. These included Yiruma's River Flows in You, Pachelbel's Canon in D, and Summer by Joe Hisaishi. Miao is a great student and a fast learner and I can't wait to continue working on these new songs together with her! :)

My 8 year old daughter has been taking piano lessons for six months from her. She tells me she has loved it and describes Amanda as follows: Amanda is very understanding; she listens and she is fun! Also she is challenging in a good way. Amanda was punctual and reliable and my daughter looked forward excitedly to her lessons. We went to one of Amanda's recitals and it made a big impression on my daughter.

Amanda has been tutoring my daughter in Piano who we are hoping taking the Grade 6 piano exam this year. She has a bachelors in Piano and other post graduate courses (I am doing a bad job of her degrees in Piano). She has traveled and had scholarship for Piano in Europe and plans to do her Masters in Europe. She is thoughtful, kind, honest, and caring. You can ask for her Youtube piano concert that she has performed.

Amanda's interview

QUESTION 01 | 08
1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?
Amanda — I began piano studies at the age of six, and I have always really enjoyed playing the piano, but I would say that I really started developing a passion for music when I discovered the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff, Frédéric Chopin, and Franz Liszt--some of my favorite composers today!
QUESTION 02 | 08
2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Amanda — Honestly, no. After listening to something on a loop more than 5 or 6 times, the music feels dry and predictable and it loses the spontaneity and freshness it once had. Even in my practicing, I never play a piece the same way twice; I like to change things up--sometimes by modulating to different keys or improvising a new chord progression just to find out where the music can take me!
QUESTION 03 | 08
3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Amanda — I can help students from a beginner level to the advanced ARCT* or LRCM* RCM* levels. I can also help students prepare for their university auditions!

*ARCT = Associate Diploma of the Royal Conservatory of Music
*LRCM = Licentiate Diploma of the Royal Conservatory of Music
*RCM = Royal Conservatory of Music examination system
QUESTION 04 | 08
4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Amanda — I have only pursued advanced studies on piano and violin, so I really can't say anything about the other instruments. Looking back though, I would say that violin is much harder at the beginning when you are just starting to learn. It is very difficult to produce a beautiful sound on the violin because of things like having correct posture, bow hold and intonation. It takes time, dedication and focus to achieve these things, and it is easy to become frustrated when you can't do them properly. On the other hand, anyone can make a nice sound on the piano--all you have to do is press down the key! However, after mastering the basics and gaining a solid foundation on either instrument, the goal is to make beautiful music, and that is the most challenging thing of all, no matter what instrument you have.
QUESTION 05 | 08
5) What are your keys to success?
Amanda — Be passionate about what you do! Also, self care and making sure that you pace yourself and are taking enough breaks is key to success and improvement!
QUESTION 06 | 08
6) Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Amanda — I don't have a favorite bar, but if I did have one I would love to meet Evgeny Kissin there! Besides being one of the top pianists and musicians on the planet, he is one of the most intelligent, genuine, and quirky people I have ever seen! You should check out this funny interview of him : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cJUAu71DBg

Aside from Kissin, I would also love to meet the pianists Horowitz and Yuja Wang!
QUESTION 07 | 08
7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Amanda — I don't have any interesting stories from my undergraduate studies, but here is a great quote from Ludwig van Beethoven:
"To play a wrong note is insignificant; to play without passion is inexcusable."
QUESTION 08 | 08
8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Amanda — I have been teaching all kinds of music students since I was twelve years old. Now, at 22, I am equipped with the knowledge and experience to help you go where you want to go!
