I like a 25% / 75% approach between technical exercices and pieces (or songs), and I always adapt my teaching to the students interests.
I use vast array of exercices to develop both hands on the guitar, I even invent new ones every week, for different difficulties that my students are having.
I also incorporate theory in my teaching, which I like to blend with technical exercices, therefore the student is learning both theory and technique, hand in hand.
In terms of learning pieces/songs, I use many multimedia tools such as drum backing tracks, slowed down recordings, pdf sheet music, etc. The ability to share my screen has been a wonderful new asset to my teaching, I can analyze music with my students as we watch the score together for example.
All of that sums my teaching pretty well. I like having fun while teaching and keeping the experience light and pleasant for the student.
I am a professionnal musician, teaching guitar as a sideline of my career for more than 10 years. I am now according more time to teaching due to the actual situation. I have studied all the way to the Doctorate level, as a classical guitarist (Yes, you can do a doctorate in guitar) and I have been performing here and there around Canada and the US since then.
