I offer informal instruction in the fundamentals of poetry to those who would like to enhance their writing practice. We will analyze and discuss examples of contemporary poetry, engaging with the ideas and identifying the literary techniques that give them emotional resonance. Lessons include a workshopping component in which we review and discuss one of the student's poems in progress.
I have taught writing at the university level for nearly three years. My approach is process and not product-oriented, but students are encouraged to generate new material for each lesson and to grow their editorial instincts. My aim is to excite literary curiosity, which in turn fuels creativity, and to support other poets in developing their craft.
I hold a BA in English Literature from McGill University and an MA in Creative Writing from University College Cork.
My poems have appeared in Field, The New Yorker, Map Literary, The Stinging Fly, The Belleville Park Pages, Quarryman, Scrivener, and The Red Wheelbarrow Poets Anthology. I have been a featured poet on Poems in Profile and was recently nominated for a Pushcart Prize.
I am fortunate to have been the featured reader at The Bowery Poetry Club, The Molly Krom Gallery (NYC), The Triskel Arts Centre in Cork, and for numerous performance and literary series in the US and abroad.
