A+ English tutor gives essay and editing help, language or literature tutoring. Help with writing and editing essays, resumes, cover letters, projects, or just increasing English skills.

Methodology

I tutor with a hands on, creative style that aims to make writing, literature, and the English language more approachable and less intimidating. The structure of my tutoring is very flexible and I encourage students to bring any work or assignments they're struggling with to me so that we can work through problems together. I aim to approach subjects from as many angles as possible and bring as many resources that will make learning more painless, fun, and engaging. My tutoring caters especially to high-school and undergraduate students, but learners of all levels are welcome and encouraged to reach out!

Background

I am a writer, editor, and student graduating from Concordia University with a double major in Honours English/Creative Writing and Western Society/Culture and I achieved straight-A's in the last four years of my degree. Whether you have no idea where to start when writing an essay, or want to just fine-tune your work, I can help you say what you're really trying to say or nail down the basics.

Eli's Resume

I am comfortable helping students of all levels and disciplines write and/or edit essays, improve their writing skills, speaking skills, and can even help students achieve better grades on written assignments of any kind as well as in English classes overall. I have achieved Straight A's throughout my university career and have served on the editorial board of a popular literature blog. I have tutored multiple students so far with great results. I bring a multimedia approach, lots of experience, and a wide variety of helpful resources to allow students to improve any English language ability: from essay/academic writing and creative projects, to more basic skills like grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Perfect! I am very impressed with how professional he is. I needed to have my job application materials proofread. Eli was instrumental in giving me the tools and the knowledge I needed to succeed in a couple recent endeavors. I went to Eli because I had heard he was someone who really cared about the clients he took on. I needed help with a cover letter and an essay. For both pieces Eli took the time to help me with my grammar and punctuation, mistakes, which form reading this review you will see I have difficulty with. Eli also helped me restructure both pieces so that they flowed and made sense. He even went so far as to ask me questions about my topics to give him a better understanding of the subjects, which in turn allowed him to prompt new ideas I would have never thought of. Whether it be an English paper, a cover letter, or a short story if it is written in the English language Eli Burley will bring the best version of you to the written word. I will continue to go to him for support and advice as my career progresses.

Eli has always had a way with words. Listening to Eli’s editing tips practically guaranteed an A grade on my papers which helped me achieve a great average in first year university. On top of his brains, he’s also a patient, kind and funny guy. I highly recommend him to anyone needing help with English.

Eli is my brother. He is very smart and nice to be around. Good sense of humour. Incredibly knowledgeable but never in a showy or intimidating manner.

Eli's interview

QUESTION 01 | 05
When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?
Eli — I've always been interested in and had a natural facility for language, storytelling, and expression, but middle school was when I learned that you could study these things under the heading of "English" and really started pursuing it as not just a personal interest, but also something to learn all the ins and outs of in order to more easily navigate the world.
QUESTION 02 | 05
What makes you passionate about your subject?
Eli — To me, language is the most important tool we use every day. Without language, we can't understand each other, share ideas, express ourselves, or get a point across. The way I see it, language makes the world go around. English just happens to be my native one.
QUESTION 03 | 05
What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?
Eli — Tutoring allows me to help people use language effectively in a way where I can more fully understand the challenges that they face at a one-on-one level. It is an environment where I can learn someone's story and assist them in overcoming obstacles by going along with them as they pick up new skills. I think part of what makes me a good tutor is that I've faced many of these challenges as a student over the years and developed strategies for making certain ideas or subjects more relevant and interesting to myself that I can then apply to the learning experience of others.
QUESTION 04 | 05
Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
Eli — All throughout high school and university I've had a few teachers (especially in art or lanaguage classes) who really knew how to motivate students and make course material more engaging by connecting concepts and skills to real life. They all brought a personal, creative touch to their teaching style and were invested in not just criteria dictated by the board they worked for, but also in judging success and relevance by the student's responses and concerns.
QUESTION 05 | 05
What are your keys to success?
Eli — My keys for success are translating concepts, processes, and skills into the student's own terms so that even the most complicated and intimidating curriculum becomes familiar, as well as stimulating as many different parts of the mind as possible by taking a diverse, multifacted approach to all types of problems and material. If I can collaborate with a student to answer the question "Why should this matter to me?" and offer them options that are compatible with how they learn, then I've already succeeded in teaching them something very important.
