Learning a new language is like running a marathon. It takes time and commitment, and it might seem impossible. If you feel like learning French is too hard or if you don’t know where to start, it totally makes sense. You’re not alone. Every language student has ever felt like this.
This is why I propose you to set S.M.A.R.T goals. Leaders and businesses use the S.M.A.R.T. method in order to focus on the right thing and keep progressing.
The S.M.A.R.T. method is good for you, too. It can help you to achieve any kind of long-term project (including learning a new language) and to stay motivated.
A S.M.A.R.T. goal is:
Why are you learning French? What is an accomplishment you would like to reach? Which ability could be useful? It can be a small challenge: writing a post on social media, ordering meals on the phone, having a conversation with your neighbor… Or it can be a bigger challenge, like going to a job interview or writing a thesis.
How can you know when you reach your goal? Improving your listening skills isn’t measurable. But being able to understand a movie without subtitles is a measurable goal. And it may be really satisfying because you know when you succeed.
Is your goal realistic? Does it match your level and skills? Do you have enough time and energy to work on it daily or weekly?
Is your goal useful? Does it motivate you? You’re most likely to persevere if the accomplishment seems relevant.
What could be a realistic deadline for your goal? Not having enough time might drive you to failure, but having too much time won’t help you to get things done. Maybe you can’t choose your own deadline. If you're starting a new job in three weeks, let’s focus on your biggest issues.
If you’re still reading at this point, I guess the S.M.A.R.T. strategy speaks to you. So, let’s make plans together. My goal is to help you to reach yours.
