University of Toronto Educated History/Anthropology/Social Sciences and Essay Writing Tutor (in person and online)

Methodology

Whether I am teaching History, Anthropology, or how to effectively and efficiently structure an Essay, my approach is based on developing critical thinking skills just as much as it is on memorization or proper spelling and grammar. Rather than just simply telling my students how they should structure an argument, or what facts they should remember, I work to develop their ability to analyze why they are learning what they are learning, or why a particular structure of argument works, so that they can be more independent and aware of their habits and skills in their future academic careers.

Specifically my method ranges from strategies like memory games and flash cards to remember specific facts/dates/etc. to discussions and explanations of particular historical events or trends, or particular academic ideas regarding History or Anthropology. For essay and assignment writing, I provide step-by-step analysis and critique of work, and give suggestions and strategies on how to improve in the future.

Background

I am a recent University of Toronto Graduate with Majors in History and Anthropology, and I have a passion for teaching all things History and Social Sciences related! I have over 6 years volunteer experience working with youth from late elementary to high school age, as well as work experience as a music teacher, and I am comfortable teaching any age/grade/experience level. I also provide more general Essay Writing and critical thinking instruction, skills that are essential in any academic field.

I performed with Arthur multiple times over the last few years and have always had a great time playing with him. He’s a creative musician and a great guitar player and singer. He’s also good with working with other people, always thinking about the musicians he plays with. Definitely recommend checking him out.

Arthur is a compassionate and reliable teacher. He takes time to teach without losing patience. Some teachers will easily become agitated when one makes mistakes. However, Arthur is very professional with teaching. He ensures that I make improvements on a step by step basis, and he encourages me to strive towards excellence. Arthur explains ideas very thoroughly to help me have a strong understanding of unfamiliar concepts. He is committed to giving services of various kinds and is devoted to teach. Overall, Arthur's services have been outstanding and absolutely worth it.

I've known Arthur for a long time. I've always wanted to learn the guitar growing up and he was always eager and dedicated to help me out. He taught me how to play and understand the guitar in ways I couldn't find online in places like youtube and so on. Also, his style of teaching helped me find ways to get through my frustrations of learning it haha. I would definitely recommend!

Arthur's interview

QUESTION 01 | 08
When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?
Arthur — I first started to play guitar in my first year of high school, although it wasn't my first choice. I brought home a huge upright bass, but my mom got angry saying it was way to big to take home from school. The next day I went back and switched to guitar. I fell in love as soon as I tried it. Haha, I'm still grateful that she made me change to this day.
QUESTION 02 | 08
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Arthur — There are a lot of artists I listen to on a regular basis, especially ones playing acoustic and indie folk music. But I like to discover and listen to something new more often than not, and I'm always looking for new jazz, rock, hip-hop, and electronic artists to enjoy too. Variety is one of my favourite things about music!
QUESTION 03 | 08
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Arthur — I think one of the most difficult but rewarding parts of learning music is being able to create your music, either by sitting down and songwriting, or creating in the moment with a jam or solo. I encourage my students to take the things they learn from other songs and make them their own, and though it takes a lot of time and work it's really worth it in the end.
QUESTION 04 | 08
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
Arthur — For me the violin seems like a really hard instrument to learn and master, since it doesn't have any frets, and you need to develop a memory of where the notes are. For a guitar player like me it's amazing what violin and other string players can do.
QUESTION 05 | 08
What are your keys to success?
Arthur — Consistant and thoughtful practice, and finding ways to enjoy everything you do with music are my keys to success. I strongly believe that 15 minutes of good practice a day is worth more than 3 hours of unfocused practice once a week. I also think you need to have fun with the challenge of practice so it never feels like a chore, but becomes one of the best parts of your day.
QUESTION 06 | 08
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
Arthur — Three artists I would like to meet are Bjork, Dallas Green, and Olafur Arnards. Each of them makes music with very different instruments, and have different levels of fame, so I'd like to know more about their individual musical processes and lives as musicians since they are all big influences for me.
QUESTION 07 | 08
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
Arthur — I think that just as important as practice and loving music is meeting other musicians to learn and play with. I've made some of my best friends through music in school and shows, and collaborating with other people is one of music's greatest joys.
QUESTION 08 | 08
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
Arthur — I always want my students to be enjoying their lessons and practice at home, and while I push them to work and try harder, I always do so in a kind and fun way. Music is meant to be a an enjoyable journey, and I want to help all my students have fun on it!
