UWindsor PhD Candidate uses student-centered teaching to educate on eating well.

Methodology

As a teacher I develop a community of co-learning, creating an open, interactive, and supportive space. It is important that my students are able make connections between course concepts, are able to adapt them, and able to acquire the skills they need to extend them into a new context. I use teaching methods such as role play, discussion, simulations, and service learning to emulate situations that students may face in their futures, beyond the course and into other sites of practice. In these active learning strategies, students are engaged in more than listening, and are involved in higher-order thinking.

Background

I am a PhD Candidate in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Windsor, with a University Teaching Certificate (UTC): Fundamentals of University Teaching (Level I; 2018). Evidence of my teaching competence can be seen through my teaching experience, success, and feedback. I have taught a first year mandatory Kinesiology course (KINE-1000; N =187 students) at the University of Windsor and received a 6.7/7 Overall Instructor Rating and 6.4/7 Overall Course Rating. I have held 11 graduate assistantships throughout my tenure as a graduate student and in 2017 received the Center for Teaching and Learning GATA Educational Practice Award (an award honoring a Graduate Assistant who has enhanced, maximized, or deepened student learning). In addition, I have taught 20 invited guest lectures in various faculties, presented at 3 international conferences on teaching and learning, and have been invited to facilitate 4 different workshops for the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
